How We Chose the Best Bookmakers for Betting on The British Open
As we briefly mentioned above, we put the bookies from our list of UK betting sites to the test, analysing their performance specifically related to the British Open. That means that we checked if they had specific bonuses and promotions for the competition, how good their odds were, how many betting markets they offered, and much more.
- A high level of payouts and profit potential.
- High quality promotions dedicated to The Open.
- The schedule of the live betting arena and streaming.
- Number of pre-match/live markets at the platform.
The British Open is one of golfβs four majors and no bookie worth their salt will scrimp on their offering for the event. That said, the five bookmakers listed on this page outperformed all others overall.

The Importance of Payouts
Payouts can make all the difference when it comes to betting on the British Open. Bookmakers have a team of experts who control the odds levels of golfers and indeed sports betting payouts in general, but that doesnβt mean that opinion never varies. Shopping around at each operator can often result in different odds levels for your favourite selection. Finding the best odds results in more money and a bigger payout once you win. We have listed our five best British Open betting sites in order of how high their average payouts were for the competition.

Best British Open Betting Offers
The Open is one of golf’s biggest events, meaning that you are sure to find British Open betting offers and promotions dedicated to the competition, especially at our recommended operators. These can be anything, from increased odds on certain players, to a wider range for each-way payouts. These offers can help increase your payouts, so check at each of the listed operators to see which has the best offer for your needs.
Live Betting and Streaming
Betting on The Open just wouldnβt be the same without live betting. All of our British Open bookmakers have live betting. It is perhaps one of the best approaches for betting on golf, since seeing the action gives you an advantage. Many golf betting markets also only work in-play. Read our page on live betting if you need a rundown of its possibilities.
Number of Markets Available
Golf has an ever-increasing number of betting markets available and operators roll out the red carpet for the British Open. Whatever bet type or market you want to use our operators will have it available. Alongside the standard, more serious markets, there are also now lots of fun, live markets to employ, which add a different dimension to the experience.
British Open Betting Markets
There are more and more markets coming to golf, but there arenβt the endless amounts that youβll find on say football betting. But, alongside the classics, there are other, more quick-fire betting options. Below weβll list some of our favourites and how to best employ them.
Head to head
Head to head is a great bet to use for single rounds. Essentially, youβre betting which player will score the lowest on a single round, or the whole tournament if desired. These are more common during match play tournaments, but you can still find them for The Open.
First Round Leader
This is another bet that will payout at the end of the first round. Youβre betting which player will be winning the tournament after the first round. The player doesnβt have to win the tournament at the end of the final round for the best to win. This bet can also often be found for second and third round leaders.
Hole in One
More of a fun bet than one that requires skill and analysis, you can bet on whether a hole in one will be scored at any point during the competition. Since this bet β like scoring a hole in one β is dependent largely on luck, we only recommend very small stakes if you want to use it.
Next hole score
A great bet to use in-play is betting on a playersβ score on the next hole. You can bet on exactly what they score they would get, for example a birdie, bogey, double bogey etc, or you bet whether they will make under par, over par, or exactly par. This is great to use on players who have great long or short games, on long or short holes respectively, as those players are more likely to score under par on these holes that suit their game.
Outright/Ante-post betting on The Open
Outright or ante-post betting is the typical betting style associated with golf. This means betting on the outcome of the tournament as a whole, rather than single holes or rounds, as with the betting markets we listed above.
British Open Winner Bets
The most well-known golf bet. You are betting on which player will win the competition. You can also use this bet each-way, which means betting whether they will finish inside the top 4 (or a wider range specified by the bookmaker). Looking for bookmakers paying more each-way is a good approach but remember that your returns are lowered, and the stake doubled to cover the each-way aspect of the bet.
Versus the Field
More variations of this bet are often found at the start of the tournament. Bookmakers will usually offer a few players βvs the fieldβ. For example, you could be offered McIlroy, Garcia and Speith versus the field for odds of 10/1. That means that any one of those three players would have to win the competition for your bet to win. It’s a nice bet to play if you have confidence in a group of players but aren’t sure who is the best.
To Miss the Cut
Halfway through The Open is the cut. Players either make or miss the cut, which is a specified score made at the halfway point. Those over the cut score are out, while those under continue playing. This bet is betting that you think a player wonβt make the cut and will be eliminated. It’s often easy to see which players are in bad form, and you then make the cut-throat decision to say they won’t advance.
Place Betting: Top 5 Finish
The clue is really in the name with this bet. Place betting is betting where you think a player will finish at the end of the tournament within a certain range. This one is betting that a player will finish in the top 5. It’s obviously easier to predict than an outright winner, thus, you will receive lowers odds, however, we’d say it was a good insurance bet for those who are confident of some certain players, but not enough to back them outright.
Best Strategies for Betting on the British Open
Generally, we like to follow the action in the tournaments leading up to the British Open. However, while of course you want a player in form, simply going for someone who has won the most recent tournaments is rarely going to pay. You can also use the market as a guide,. Check which players are having price fluctuations, especially those players who might not have won anything lately but are more than capable of winning. Thereβs too much to go into detail here, so check our golf strategy betting page for more.

The British Open is also known as the Open Championship or just The Open. It is one of golfβs four major championships and is the oldest of the four. It is usually played in the middle of July and was first played in 1860 at Prestwick. It is the only major played outside of the USA and is played at various courses in England and Scotland. Fourteen different courses have hosted the Open. The location changes between five courses over a five-year period, with the courses alternating each year.
2018 was the 147th version of the Open and was won by Italian Francesco Molinari. In 2019, Northern Ireland will begin to host the competition, with Royal Portrush Golf Club playing host. Portrush has hosted the event once before in 1951, which was to that point the only occasion in which the Open was played at a course outside England and Scotland.
It is named the Open because it is open to all professional and amateur golfers. Even so, only very few amateurs get to play, either by qualification or by invitation. It is one of the most successful and prestigious tournaments in the world and is thoroughly loved by its fans.
It was previously shown on the BBC and was on free to air television from 1955-2015. This all changed when the monolithic company, Sky, bought the rights and took this opportunity away. It is now only for paid customers, and they have the rights up until 2021.
It is one of the darlings of golf and epitomises all the traditions that come with the sport. All golf fans look forward to this event each year with eager anticipation, and it often delivers great storylines.

History of The Open and Betting
Since starting in 1860, 14 courses have hosted the Open. The first was Prestwick, but St Andrews has since become the course most associated with the event. The R&A now conducts the tournament. The prize fund for last yearβs Open was $10.5m. The Open is famous as one of the worldβs best links events. Links courses are coastal, open terrain, and are seen as the purest form of golf, with the weather and conditions often having a big effect on the game.
After local dominance in the tournamentβs early years, the big three of Player, Palmer and Nicklaus dominated between 1959-1974. Next, Tom Watson, Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, and Greg Norman all won multiple times up until the early 1990s, before Tiger Woods led us into the new era with three wins here at the turn of the millennium.

Facts and Trivia about betting on the British Open
Betting on golf took off in recent years with the internet. There isnβt too much of a history between the Open and betting, but, Rory McIlroyβs win in 2014 earned his dad one of the sportβs most well-known bets. Check it out below.
-
Roryβs Dadβs confidence is paid offRory McIlroy
A famous one. Roryβs Dad bet in 2004 that his son would someday win the Open. Gerry staked Β£200 at odds of 500-1 that his son would win the Open in the next ten years. That bet was paid off in 2014 when Rory won.
-
Molinari wins with long oddsFrancesco Molinari
The longest priced winner in recent years is Francesco Molinari, who has 33/1 pre-tournament when he won in 2018. The Italian was a shrewd bet however, as many noticed that he was in good form, and he rewarded many early backers.
“Not a lot of people have achieved the career Grand Slam. And if everything goes the right way tomorrow to get to that three-quarters of the way there is some achievement by the age of 25.”
