Premier League Matchday 10 Preview – Prediction + Tips 2017/18

The Premier League starts with a bang at lunchtime on Saturday with a tantalizing fixture between Manchester United and Spurs. Elsewhere, Manchester City travel to West Brom looking to keep up their incredible winning record, while the action goes through to Monday night where Burnley will host Newcastle.

Match of the Day

Tottenham against Liverpool was our game of the week last week and it turned out to be a cracker. While Liverpool were disappointing, Spurs were anything but, as Harry Kane continued his remarkable goal-scoring form. Manchester United, on the other hand, were hugely disappointing, falling to a shock defeat against Premier League new-comers Huddersfield. The build-up to this one means it’s almost impossible to call what will happen.

About the Game:

Without doubt the biggest surprise result of last weekend was Manchester United losing to Huddersfield. It was the first time United have lost in the league this season and leaves them five points behind leaders Manchester City. Mourinho praised the Huddersfield team and was quick to criticize the attitude of his own players. While it’s certainly true that the Red Devils just didn’t look up for it, injuries, especially in defence, are racking up. With Bailly out and Jones limping off less than half an hour into the game, United looked weak at the back.

Both Bailly and Jones should be fit for this one, although both Paul Pogba and Marouane Fellaini will need a few more weeks. United beat Swansea on Tuesday night to make it through the the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup, but this will be a completely different level of game. Despite their good results, United have struggled against the few top opponents they’ve played this season and Tottenham will be their toughest league encounter to date.

Bet on the match of the week between Man U and Spurs at Betway .

Tottenham have really found their form since the gameweek two loss to Chelsea. Spurs have won their last four, and are unbeaten in their last seven league games, along with three Champions League games. Tottenham did away with Liverpool last weekend with a home performance that may have finally lifted the Wembley curse once and for all. Other than Manchester City, Tottenham have the best form in the league and are joint on points with their opponents.

Wednesday night has brought with it two caveats however. First, Spurs let slip a 2-0 half-time lead to end up losing 3-2 to West Ham in the Carabao Cup. While it wasn’t a full-strength team, it’s not the best preparation and brings an impressive winning-streak to an end. Second is Harry Kane’s absence from the squad on Wednesday. Pochettino had stated Kane would be rested, but the striker did limp off the pitch towards the end of last week’s win against Liverpool, raising suspicions of an injury. Spurs’ fate always seems closely aligned to Kane’s performances and if the striker misses out, that could affect the result massively.

Prediction: Tottenham Draw no bet – This will be a difficult one for Spurs to win, but United will find it even harder to turn Spurs over. Tottenham have won all four of their away games and are unbeaten in seven league games, winning five and drawing two, along with being unbeaten in their three Champions League games. Although if Harry Kane does miss out through injury, it could be a different story.

Rest of the Premier League Games

After a top of the table clash between Manchester United and Spurs, Arsenal will have the chance to keep up the pace with the leaders against Swansea. Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester City all feature on Saturday and will attempt to do the same, while on Monday night, Burnley will host Newcastle.

About the Game:

Arsenal emerged comfortable winners at Everton last week. While it was largely down to Everton’s red-card, Arsenal looked a much better team with what is undoubtedly their best attacking three of Lacazette, Sánchez, and Özil. Wenger must deploy these three again here and give them time to gel, if Arsenal are going to mount any sort of a title challenge. The Gunners came from behind against Norwich to win 2-1 in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, though almost all the first team players were given a night off.

Swansea were uncharacteristically sloppy in front of their own fans last weekend and slipped to defeat against Leicester. The Swans will have to improve dramatically here, especially in defence, or the aforementioned Arsenal trio could run riot. The Swans fielded a relatively strong team in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday but ultimately suffered another loss at the hands of Manchester United.

Prediction: Arsenal win + O 2.5 goals – Arsenal are in good goal scoring form, especially at home, where they have scored at least two goals in each game.

Crystal Palace v West Ham

About the Game:

Crystal Palace put up a good fight but couldn’t continue on from their shock victory against Chelsea with another win last weekend. They lost by just one goal, but were second best to an impressive Newcastle. Nevertheless, Roy Hodgson will perhaps be looking rather favourably on this one against an out of sorts West Ham. Although Tuesday’s 4-1 Carabao Cup loss to Bristol City is hardly the best preparation. Hodgson said his team completely capitulated in the match and if Palace don’t start getting results soon, the same could be said of their season.

With Ronald Koeman relieved of his duties at Everton, Slaven Bilic is now the favourite to be the next manager for the chop. West Ham were dire at home to Brighton last week and deserved to lose the game. Bilic has been told he has time by the board, but unless the performances and results improve quickly, it’s likely that patience will not last long. A second-half miracle performance in Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup fixture that saw West Ham beat rivals Tottenham will have raised spirits massively, so it’s important that the Hammers carry that momentum forward.

Prediction: West Ham Draw no bet – The Hammers showed what they’re made of against Tottenham on Wednesday and can put the Brighton game behind them.

About the Game:

Liverpool endured a difficult defeat against Spurs on Sunday and reality is now starting to set in. With one win in six league games, they already sit twelve points behind leaders Manchester City and could see their title hopes disappear in the next few weeks. The Reds look a far less dangerous team without Sadio Mané, but they will have to make do without him for at least another three weeks. Let’s hope that they’re still in the race when he finally does come back.

Huddersfield will be on a high after pulling off a shock victory against Manchester United on Saturday. United manager José Mourinho praised their spirited performance and called Huddersfield deserved winners. That game ended a poor spell for the Terriers, who prior to the game hadn’t won since the second week of the season. Liverpool will be out for blood after losing their previous fixture, so it will have to be an equally spirited performance.

Prediction: Liverpool win – Liverpool have a good run of fixtures starting here and will use this match to get back to winning ways.

Watford v Stoke

  • Venue: Vicarage Road
  • Saturday 28th October 15:00

About the Game:

Marco Silva said that his side did 90% of what was required to win last week and in truth, they once again looked good and were unlucky to lose. That missing 10% likely refers to Watford’s finishing. Richarilson – despite being impressive once again – was the main culprit, spurning two great goal-scoring chances. The Hornets are still waiting on the return of both first choice centre backs, meaning they are without a clean sheet in five games. Nevertheless, if Watford keep playing like they have been, they should emerge winners here.

Stoke threw away a fantastic chance to get back to winning ways last weekend as they eventually lost at home to Bournemouth. The Potters sit out of the relegation zone only on goal difference and have now lost four of the last five games. Watford are extremely tricky opponents who have lost just once at home this season and that match was against Manchester City. Ryan Shawcross should start his second game since returning from injury but he looked a yard off the pace last week, while the Potters will likely be without Xherdan Shaqiri.

Prediction: Watford win – Despite their loss last week, Watford are playing great football and beat Arsenal in their last home match.

West Brom v Manchester City

  • Quick Glance Odds H: 10/1 D: 11/2 A: 2/9

About the Game:

West Brom slumped to their third defeat in six games last weekend against Southampton. They’ve drawn the other three matches, meaning they are without a win since the 19th August. Surprisingly though, they are still unbeaten at home this season, with one win and three draws. The Baggies have injuries in defence which could prove significant though, with both Johnny Evans and Craig Dawson unlikely to be fit in time.

Perhaps the only surprising aspect of City’s win against Burnley last weekend was the fact that the were limited to scoring just three goals. A lot more surprising was City’s match against Wolves in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday. It took penalties for City to go through and while it wasn’t a full strength team by any means, it did feature first-team players Raheem Sterling, Sergio Agüero, and Gabriel Fernando de Jesus. Guardiola will likely be taking the league much more seriously and while West Brom are unbeaten at home, it would seem foolish to bet against City here.

Prediction: Man City win + U 3.5 goals – West Brom are unbeaten at home this season and will set up to try to keep City out. Guardiola will have to rotate players after many played 120 minutes on Tuesday night. This could be a little trickier than it may seem for City.

Bournemouth v Chelsea

  • Venue: Dean Court
  • Saturday 28th October 17:30
  • Referee: Craig Pawson
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 9/2 D: 3/1 A: 4/7

About the Game:

Bournemouth pulled off a great victory away at Stoke last weekend. It wasn’t enough to lift them out of the relegation zone, but it was the first points the Cherries have picked up on the road. This is certainly a much tougher fixture, but Bournemouth can take some confidence from the Tuesday night win against Middlesbrough in the Carabao Cup. Callum Wilson got his first goal since returning from injury and could prove vital to Bournemouth if they want to stay up.

Chelsea were perhaps a little fortunate to take all three points against Watford last weekend. They were far from convincing and relied on the Hornets missing many chances. Again on Wednesday, Chelsea only sneaked past Everton in the Carabao Cup, though the performance was more solid. It has been an interesting season already for Chelsea, with shock losses to Burnley and Crystal Palace. They’re yet to draw away from home and have lost just one of four, so we expect them to make no mistakes here.

Prediction: Chelsea win – The Blues have good away form and with almost everyone fit again, they should emerge victors here.

Brighton v Southampton

  • Venue: Amex Stadium
  • Sunday 29th October 13:30
  • Referee: Neil Swarbrick
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 11/5 D: 9/4 A: 5/4

About the Game:

Brighton got their first away win of the season last Friday in a fantastic showing against West Ham. Brighton were worthy winners against a disappointing Hammers team, with Glenn Murray bagging two on the night. Tomer Hemed is available again after returning from suspension, but Chris Houghton has a decision on his hands whether to start Hemed, after Murray has filled in well in his absence.

Southampton left it late to get what was just their third win of the season last weekend against West Brom. In the end it was a fantastic piece of individual skill from Sofiane Boufal which earned the three points, in what was largely another uninspiring Saints display. Both teams have a win and a draw in their last two games, so this is anyone’s to fight for.

Prediction: U 2.5 goals – Both teams have featured in just three over 2.5 goals games each this season.

Leicester v Everton

About the Game:

Leicester made it two wins in two since departing with manager Craig Shakespeare with a 3-1 Carabao Cup victory against Leeds on tuesday. The Foxes went on a good run of form after parting ways with Claudio Ranieri prior to Shakespeare’s appointment. Could they be set for a similar run? Claude Puel was appointed the new manager in the week in what the club called a perfect match, but the proof will be in the results.

Ronald Koeman became the third Premier League manager to be sacked this season after last weekend’s loss to Arsenal. David Unsworth will take over temporarily while the club search for a new permanent manager. Everton’s disastrous start to the season shows little signs of improving, but perhaps the split from Koeman will remove the shackles somewhat. In fact, Everton looked a different team in their first match under Unsworth in the Carabao cup on Wednesday, despite eventually losing. Leicester recently sacked their manager too and have just appointed a new one, while the Foxes are hardly in good form themselves. This will be an interesting spectacle.

Prediction: Both teams to score – Neither team has a good defensive record while there are two new managers looking to make their mark.

Burnley v Newcastle

  • Venue: Turf Moor
  • Monday 30th October
  • Referee: Mike Dean
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 7/4 D: 11/5 A: 13/5

About the Game:

Burnley’s defeat to Manchester City was their first loss since August and in all fairness to them, was somewhat expected. They’ve lost just one of their home games and are notoriously difficult to beat at Turf Moor, though they might struggle for a cutting edge in this one; both Chris Wood and Sam Vokes are a doubt to be fit in time.

Newcastle have been quietly going about their business this season and earned their fourth win of the season last week against struggling Crystal Palace. The Magpies are one point and one place above Burnley in the table and will certainly cause them problems. They have just the one away win so far though, suggesting that they may play for a draw against a team that is particularly strong at home.

Prediction: U 2.5 goals – All but one of Burnley’s home games have featured under 2.5 goals.
