Premier League Matchday 14 Preview – Prediction + Tips 2018/19

A Friday night fixture kicks us off this week before we dive into the Christmas period and the hectic schedule it brings.

Over the next month, Premier League teams will play the equivalent of two games a week, as 2018 comes to a close.  How the players and managers cope is always interesting, as rotation of players becomes essential to avoid injury and fatigue. We could start to see more surprise results from this point.

Match of the Day

There are some tasty fixtures this week, but few matches in the world are fought with some intense rivalry as the Merseyside derby. Liverpool are the hosts here and are still unbeaten domestically.

Liverpool v Everton

  • Venue: Anfield
  • Sunday 2nd December 16:15
  • Referee: Chris Kavanagh
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 4/11 D: 15/4 A: 8/1

About the Game:

Liverpool remain unbeaten in the league but it’s fair to say their form is dipping somewhat. Despite the convicing scoreline, Liverpool left it somewhat late last week against Watford and weren’t necessarily as dominant as the score suggests. Preparations were also hampered by defeat to PSG in the crucial midweek Champions League fixture. Liverpool look set to crash out of that competition early, despite reaching the final last year.

That defeat will certainly have had an impact on the players, but the merseyside derby is sure to fire them back up. The Reds are one of just two remaining unbeaten teams in the EPL this season and will not want that record to come to an end against their local rivals. Klopp may look to change things around somewhat as the fixtures really pile up after this. Jordan Henderson is suspended, but Klopp can welcome back Keita to the side after injury. Xherdan Shaqiri didn’t start on Wednesday night and may return to the starting lineup here as Liverpool look to regain their attacking edge.

Bet on the match between Liverpool and Everton at Coral

Everton are improving with each game. They’re unbeaten in their last three games as they have put together both a nice run of form and some great football. Known more for his attacking style, manager Silva seems to finally have the defence organised too, with the Toffees recording three consecutive clean sheets.

That may have something to do with the introduction of Yerry Mina to the team. The giant Colombian defender has looked composed in both his Premier League games, after not featuring for the first part of the season due to injury. But Silva seems to have put together a balanced side. Andre Gomes is commanding things in the centre of the park and his former Barcelona compadriate, Lucas Digne, is looking a fantastic prospect as an attacking full back. Up front, Richarlison continues his evolution into a striker, while Gylfi Siggurdson is back in the goals as a number ten. Despite Liverpool’s defensive prowess, Everton have every chance to cause an upset here.

Prediction: Under 2.5 goals – One of the world’s fiercest rivalries, this one will be tight, with neither wanting to concede goals.

Rest of the Premier League Games

Our match of the day is part of an absolutely fantastic bill of football on Sunday that features five of the top six teams. But things get underway early with a Friday night match between Cardiff and Wolves.

Cardiff v Wolves

  • Venue: Cardiff City Stadium
  • Friday 30 November 20:00
  • Referee: Andre Marriner
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 11/4 D: 23/10 A: 6/5

About the Game:

Despite two wins in their last five, Cardiff are still deep in the relegation zone and above only Fulham in the table. The team has only scored 11 goals and will be hoping to improve this record through their top scorer Callum Paterson, who has three goals to his name. Souleymane Bamba provides the set piece threat, the Ivory Coast defender has scored two goals so far this season.

Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo was awarded the Barclays Manager of the Month for September. The award now seems like a poisoned chalice with the newly promoted side gaining just 1 point in the last five matches. Raul Jimenez is the team’s danger man with three goals and four assists for the team. Wolves seem comfortable in 11th place but with 7 teams within 4 points that could change very quickly.

Prediction: Both teams to score – Despite Wolve’s strong start to the season, they now haven’t kept a clean sheet for some time.

Crystal Palace v Burnley

  • Venue: Selhurst Park
  • Saturday 01 December 15:00
  • Referee: Chris Kavanagh
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 4/7 D: 11/4 A: 5/1

About the Game:

Crystal Palace are 16th in the league and are on a poor record of eight matches without a win. They have only gained two points in their last five matches. They were content with a draw against Manchester United but will need a good result to avoid sinking lower the table as they are just one place above the relegation zone.

Burnley are only one spot behind their opponent Palace in 17th. Sean Dyche’s men have only managed one point in the last five matches and if this match was played towards the end of the season rather than now it would be considered a relegation six-pointer. Iceland’s Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson is Burnley’s one to watch. The 28-year-old has 2 goals and 4 assists in the Premier League this season.

Prediction: Crystal Palace win – Burnley are on a poor run, while Palace have both home advantage and Wilfred Zaha back in the team.

Huddersfield v Brighton

  • Venue: John Smith’s Stadium
  • Saturday 01 December 15:00
  • Referee: Michael Oliver
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 11/8 D: 19/10 A: 23/10

About the Game:

Huddersfield have had their best run in five matches collecting seven points to lift them to 15th in the table. They will be hoping to build up on the weekend triumph at Wolves to extend their three match unbeaten run. David Wagner’s side however have an inferior goal scoring record of 0.62 goals per game against Brighton’s 1.08. In the last 24 matches between the two sides, both teams have won seven with ten draws registered in the fixture. ;

Brighton are in 12th and have also collected seven points in their last five games. The English Ibrahimović, Glenn Murray, is just one goal shy of the top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with seven goals for the 35-year-old so far this season. This is a great chance to bounce back from the three match winless streak.

Prediction: Under 2.5 goals – Huddersfield have finally started to score goals, but both teams here are still far from prolific.

Leicester v Watford

  • Venue: King Power
  • Saturday 01 December 15:00
  • Referee: Graham Scott
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 6/5 D: 23/10 A: 23/10

About the Game:

Leicester have had an on and off season, of course tainted with the helicopter crash that led to the death of their owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha. On the field, they lack the services of Three Lions maestro Harry Maguire, but will be glad James Maddison is back in the side, he has scored three goals and registered two assists this season.

Watford have fared well against other mid-table teams so far, so may fancy their chances here. Watford were forced to play with their shields up against Liverpol last week, but this one should be an opportunity for the Hornets to once again show off their attacking side.

Prediction: Prediction: Over 2.5 goals – This could be a good spectacle as two teams known more for attacking than defending meet head on.

Manchester City v Bournemouth
Man C Form Guide WLWWD

  • Venue: The Etihad
  • Saturday 01 December 15:00
  • Referee: Stuart Atwell
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 1/10 D: 9/1 A: 16/1

About the Game:

The League leaders Man City have home advantage and a great chance to improve their lead at the top of the table. They are still unbeaten in the league, collecting maximum points from the last five matches. Pep Guardiola’s men have scored forty goals in the last thirteen matches with three players Aguero (8), Sterling (7), and Sane (5) above the five goals mark. The big question is who will stop the Champions?

Bournemouth have lost three consecutive Premier League matches against Man United, Arsenal, and Newcastle with the same score line of 2 – 1. This comes after Eddie Howe won Manager of the Month for October after an impressive run. They will be heading to the Etihad stadium looking for their first ever win against Manchester City. Their quest has been boosted by the return of Joshua King who scored against Arsenal. This provides a chance for him to team up with Callum Wilson who is their best player with six goals and four assists, form that was enough to earn him a call up to England squad.

Prediction: Manchester City -2.5 Handicap – City only managed a draw in the Champions League but they are at home here and will be expected to score plenty.

Newcastle v West Ham

  • Venue: St James’ Park
  • Saturday 01 December 15:00
  • Referee: Paul Tierny
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 11/8 D: 11/5 A: 2/1

About the Game:

Rafa Benitez will be pleased with his team’s recent performances, winning three consecutive matches and gathering ten points in their last five games. This is a great turn around for the former Liverpool manager after the side faced a bad run of results and fan protests against owner Mike Ashley’s running of the club. They play at home against West Ham and will be hoping Salomon Rondon keeps up his impressive performances to earn them a fourth consecutive victory.

West Ham lost Andriy Yarmolenko to injury till the end of the season and will hope their top scorer Marko Arnautović, who has five goals, returns to full fitness to team up with Felipe Anderson, who is on four goals. Manuel Pellegrini’s West Ham did appear to be turning their season round after a terrible start to the campaign but have only won one game in their last five matches. .

Prediction: Both teams to score – Newcastle are on a good run but West Ham have tonnes of attacking firepower and should cause them problems.

Southampton v Manchester United
Soton Form Guide WDLDD
Man U Form Guide WWWLW
  • Venue: St Marys
  • Saturday 01 December 17:30
  • Referee: Kevin Friend
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 3/1 D: 11/4 A: 5/6

About the Game:

With no wins in the last nine league matches, Southampton are still in the relegation zone. They have however not lost a match in their last two Premier League home matches. A draw against United would be seen as a positive result for the 18th placed team.

Jose Mourinho will be furious for the side’s lack of scoring ability after only managing a goalless draw at home to Crystal Palace. Romelu Lukaku, who has been the Red Devils main man, hasn’t scored in eleven matches in all competitions. The United boss believes the top four is a reality for this United team by Christmas. However they have had to rely on David de Gea, who United have just activated a one-year extension on, to even be in the 7th place they occupy. Just two clean sheets in thirteen is so uncharacteristic of the Portuguese play style that has been characterised by great defensive displays.

Prediction: Manchester United win – They’re not playing well but they are somehow grinding out results. United are a good price to win this one so it’s worth a shot.

Chelsea v Fulham
Chelsea Form Guide LDDDW
Fulham Form Guide WWLWD
  • Venue: Stamford Bridge
  • Sunday 02 December 12:00
  • Referee: Craig Pawson
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 1/7 D: 13/2 A: 16/1

About the Game:

Chelsea lost to Spurs last time out to end their unbeaten run in the league but retained their place in the top four. Eden Hazard, who has struggled with injury, is missed in the Chelsea camp. Chelsea have managed just eight points in the last five games and will be looking for a win after failing to gain maximum points in two consecutive matches.

Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrović now matches Eden Hazard’s seven goals and the former Chelsea man Andre Shurrle matches Alvaro Morata on five goals. This proves both sides are evenly matched coming to this match and it could be a fairly contested encounter. Former Chelsea manger Claudio Ranieri will be up against his former side Chealsea. Belief is high with the Fulham faithful who watched a fantastic game in Ranieri’s first game in charge, a 3-2 win at home against Southampton.

Prediction: Over 2.5 goals – If Chelsea defend like they did in their last match there are sure to be goals, while Fulham are sure to concede.

Arsenal v Tottenham

  • Venue: Emirates Stadium
  • Sunday 02 December 14:05
  • Referee: Mike Dean
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 6/4 D: 12/5 A: 17/10

About the Game:

Arsenal earned qualification from their Europa league group on Thursday and are still performing well domestically. They have had it relatively easy over the last six weeks or so in terms of fixtures, but things take a turn for the worse here. There couldn’t be a more fiery derby to kick things off for the hectic winter schedule.

Spurs are looking good lately. An assured performance last week ended Chelsea’s unbeaten domestic run, while Champions League hopes are still alive after a crucial win against Inter. Christian Eriksen is back in form and, despite some tough upcoming fixtures, Spurs could have a fruitful Christmas.

Prediction: Arsenal Race to 3 corners – The Gunners will look to start with a bang and should see joy down the flanks.
