Premier League Matchday 16 Preview – Prediction + Tips 2019/20

It’s week sixteen of the EPL, after some midweek shenanigans we are back for some weekend action. Everton sacked Silva and now find themselves in the relegation zone.

This weekend sees some tasty fixtures lined-up. The games are starting to come thick and fast through this Christmas period and it will be interesting to see how the table looks come January.

Match of the Day

The best game of the week is surely the Manchester derby. It is a game that always brings a tremendous atmosphere and despite City’s superiority, it should still be a good match.

Man City v Man United

  • Venue: Etihad Stadium
  • Saturday 7 December 17:30
  • Referee: Anthony Taylor
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 3/10 D: 9/2 A: 9/1

About the Game:

Man City trounced Burnley 4-1 midweek, and are now looking to do the same to their cross-city rivals. It is being set up for a juicy contest. Last year, the did the double over the reds and are certainly capable of doing so again this season.

Sergio Aguero looks set to miss out so City will turn to Gabriel Jesus to produce the goods for them. City will will be looking for their fourth consecutive home win. As is always in a derby game, surprises can happen, but at the end of the day the Citizens should be the ones walking away with three points in this one.

Bet on Man City v Man Utd at Betway

Man United aren’t having a good season. Nevertheless, they like playing against the big boys. They are unbeaten in five games against last year’s top six. United’s negative counter-attacking style suits when they play the bigger teams. Even so, if they go behind early, there is not much they will be able to do.

Marcus Rashford is on top form and is United’s top scorer with nine goals. He performed admirably midweek against Spurs, and he needs to do the same again if United stand any chance in this one. Even so, as is always with United this season, they already performed once this week, they won’t be able to do it again.

Prediction: City to win – It could be a tough game, but they should leave with all the points in this one.

Rest of the Premier League Games

Here’s our previews and betting tips for all the rest of the weekend’s action.

Everton v Chelsea

  • Venue: Goodison Park
  • Saturday 7 December 12:30
  • Referee: Craig Pawson
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 5/2 D: 11/4 A: 1/1

About the Game:

Few would have thought that Everton would be in the relegation zone in December, yet here we are. If they don’t buck up their ideas they could be in the Championship next year, in what could only be described as a disaster. They sacked Silva after the midweek loss to Liverpool, and the fans will be hoping for a reaction in this one.

Chelsea have loved life away from home this season, with five wins to just two defeats. Unless the Toffees somehow perform a miracle, they should add to the win column on Saturday. The Blues already have 19 goals to their name and this could be a high-scoring game.

Prediction: Chelsea to win – Everton are down on confidence and now without a manager. All signs point to a Chelsea victory.

Bournemouth v Liverpool

  • Venue: Vitality Stadium
  • Saturday 7 December 15:00
  • Referee: Chris Kavanagh
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 11/2 D: 15/4 A: 17/40

About the Game:

Bournemouth are quietly having a torrid time as of late and have lost four on the bounce. They are just two points above the relegation zone, and despite the plaudits Eddie Howe gets, he really needs to turn it around fast. It won’t be this weekend where it happens.

Liverpool love playing at the Vitality Stadium and have won 4-0 on their previous two visits to the ground. In 15 games they have won 14 and just one draw. Can anyone stop this machine? Mo Salah was on the bench midweek and could also stay there this weekend. With the way both sides are playing this could be a rout for the Reds.

Prediction: Liverpool to win (-2) – Until someone else knocks them down it is impossible to bet against this side.

Tottenham v Burnley
Spurs Form Guide LDWWD
Burnley Form Guide LLLDD
  • Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
  • Saturday 7 December 15:00
  • Referee: Kevin Friend
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 2/5 D: 15/4 A: 7/1

About the Game:

Mourinho’s return to Old Trafford didn’t go as planned, and they have now shipped two goals in each of the past four games. He will be looking for a reaction from his side after his first defeat. Son Heung-min and Deli Alli will be the spearheads and both have been in superb form in the past few matches.

Burnley have only one away win all season and that was against the bottom side, Watford. Although Ashley Westwood is eligible for a return to the side he is a doubt with a groin injury. Ashley Barnes should feature for the Clarets. It will be a tough outing for Burnley and they will be happy with any kind of result in this one.

Prediction: Spurs to win- Mourinho will want to establish Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as a fortress. They should win this one.

Watford v Crystal Palace

  • Venue: Vicarage Road
  • Saturday 7 December 15:00
  • Referee: Martin Atkinson
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 11/8 D: 23/10 A: 2/1

About the Game:

Watford are rock bottom and are staring relegation in the face. They haven’t won at home all season and are truly the whipping boys of the league. It’s hard to see a way out for them and it is a shame, considering their performance in the league in the past years.

Crystal Palace haven’t won any of their last three games against Watford, but this seems like the game that could change that. They have bounce back in recent games and are looking for their third win on the trot. What’s more if they win they could move back into the top six. They should do, but whether they will is a different story.

Prediction: Palace to win – This is the type of game the Eagles don’t show up in, but they should get three points in this one.

Aston Villa v Leicester

Leicester Form Guide WDWLD
  • Venue: Villa Park
  • Sunday 8 December 14:00
  • Referee: Michael Oliver
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 10/3 D: 14/5 A: 4/5

About the Game:

Aston Villa are just one point above the drop zone and will be scrapping for every point they can get. They face a tough test this weekend, even if historically they perform well against the Foxes at Villa Park. Their last defeat to Leicester at home came way back in December 2001.

Leicester have won seven PL games in a row, which is a club record, and they will be confident of making it eight this weekend. It is remarkable that they have performed so well, yet are still eight off the top of the table. What’s more they have won the last three away games by a score of 13-0. It would be a big surprise if they lose this one.

Prediction: Leicester to win – Apart from Liverpool, the Foxes are the form team in the league, this one should be another three points.

Newcastle v Southampton

  • Venue: St James’ Park
  • Sunday 8 December 14:00
  • Referee: David Coote
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 6/4 D: 11/5 A: 15/8

About the Game:

Newcastle got a midweek victory when they were thoroughly outplayed. Such is life. Now, they entertain Southampton at home, where they have only lost once. Granted they have four draws, to only two victories at home. They are a negative football team, but with the players at their disposal there’s not much else to be done. Bruce has done a fine job so far.

Southampton looked dead and buried a few weeks ago, but two wins on the bounce and they have climbed out of the relegation zone and things are starting to look up for the Saints. Danny Ings has shown what he is capable of with eight goals in the league so far, and the Saints will be looking for him to continue this form.

Prediction: Draw – This one could go either way, but a draw seems like the most likely outcome.

Norwich City v Sheffield United
Norwich City Form Guide WDLDD
Sheffield United Form Guide WWWLW
  • Venue: Carrow Road
  • Sunday 8 December 14:00
  • Referee: Simon Hooper
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 19/10 D: 5/2 A: 11/8

About the Game:

Norwich are still in the relegation zone, and are four points from safety. Pukki has found his scoring boots again, but it still wasn’t enough to secure any points during the week. This is the kind of game the need to win, it could be an entertaining encounter, but will ultimately end in disappointment for the Canaries.

Sheffield United still haven’t lost away from home, although the draws are beginning to stack up. They lost midweek in a match they dominated and will be hoping to pick up three here. It’s incredible they find themselves in the top half. Even so, they are only five points away from the drop zone, so can’t afford to take their foot off the pedal.

Prediction: Sheffield United to win – Although this one could be a draw, we’ll lean towards a Blades win in this one.

Brighton v Wolves
Brighton Form Guide LDDDW

  • Venue: American Express Community Stadium
  • Sunday 8 December 16:30
  • Referee: Jon Moss
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 17/10 D: 21/10 A: 9/5

About the Game:

Brighton produced a sensational performance to beat Arsenal at the Emirates in the midweek game. It was a great victory that came on the back of three consecutive losses, and few people predicted it. They are unbeaten against Wolves in four games and will be hoping to extend that streak in this one.

Wolves have only lost two games all season, and if they could’ve turned some of their eight draws into wins they would’ve been looking at the CL places as a realistic target. Their away record is decent, with two wins, four draws, and one loss. This could also end in a draw, but we have back them for a win here.

Prediction: Wolves to win – Brighton got a big win at Arsenal but will come back to earth in this match.

West Ham United v Arsenal
West Ham United Form Guide DDWLL
Arsenal Form Guide LWDLL
  • Venue: London Stadium
  • Monday 9 December 21:00
  • Referee: Mike Dean
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 23/10 D: 3/1 A: 1/1

About the Game:

West Ham have been in pretty terrible form as of late and are only two points above the drop-zone. They did get an unexpected win last week away at London rivals, Chelsea. The Hammers will be hoping that another London Derby provides the same sort of outcome. Unless, they start picking up points soon, they could be facing a touch relegation battle.

Freddie Ljungberg’s start to management has not been kind. With a draw and a loss Arsenal find themselves slipping further and further down the table. They are on their worst run of form since 1977, with no win in nine games in all competitions. It seems like they are a team without direction and lacking leadership. It will be a tough game to turn it round.

Prediction: Draw – Both teams are struggling and could cancel each other out with their wayward performances.
