Premier League Matchday 23 Preview – Prediction + Tips 2019/20

It’s matchweek 23 of the EPL, and we have a weekend packed of tasty fixtures. The table is beginning to shape up with the relegation race the most intriguing aspect.

Can Watford continue their resurgence? Or will Jose’s boys finally come good? There are plenty of other story lines to follow this weekend, as well as the match of the week.

Match of the Day

The match of the weekend is undoubtedly the North-West derby, with Manchester United travelling to Liverpool. In recent years, Liverpool have dominated, yet could this be the season that United get one over on their old rivals?

Liverpool v Man United

  • Venue: Anfield
  • Sunday 19 January 16:30
  • Referee: Craig Pawson
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 4/11 D: 4/1 A: 15/2

About the Game:

Liverpool’s relentless march carries on. Their home record this season is 11-0-0 and this Man Utd team don’t pose much of a threat to it. Liverpool are unbeaten in a staggering 38 PL games. The third longest run in the league’s history.

They will be hoping to go the whole season and beat Arsenal’s record of 49 unbeaten. The team to end that run was Utd, but there is no chance that happens this weekend. The crazy thing about Liverpool’s run is that there has been no one player that has dominated the side. Both Sadio Mane and Mo Salah have 11 and 10 goals respectively, and they are nowhere near the top scorer charts. They are such an impressive team and it’s what makes them so great.

Bet on Liverpool v Man Utd at William Hill

On the other hand, Manchester United continuously show signs of hope, only for it to be ripped away. Marcus Rashford has stepped up to the plate this season, and is the top scorer with 14 goals. However, he suffered an injury in the midweek cup game against Wolves and could miss out.

Their league form has been improving and have three wins in four PL games. They are only five points of fourth place, so there is still hope they can salvage something from the season. Even so, the disparity between these sides will be on display this Sunday as we predict Liverpool smash them off the park.

Prediction: Liverpool to win – There’s no way Utd win this one. It should be a comfortable victory for the Reds.

Rest of the Premier League Games

Coming up are our previews and betting tips for all the rest of the weekend’s action.

Watford v Tottenham

  • Venue: Vicarage Road
  • Saturday 18 Janaury 12:30
  • Referee: Michael Oliver
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 11/5 D: 12/5 A: 5/4

About the Game:

Watford now find themselves one point and one place above the relegation zone. Nigel Pearson has clearly worked miracles and the run they are on is astonishing. If form were any indicator, then they should see this as another potential three points. Troy Deeney has four goals in his past five games and will be hoping to bang another one in on Saturday.

Spurs’ league form has suffered of late, and they haven’t recorded a victory in three PL games. They desperately need three points to keep up with the top four, but it will be a difficult weekend. New signing Gedson Fernandes could feature with both Sissoko and Ndombele both injured and Eriksen underperforming.

Prediction: Watford to win – The Hornets pull out another surprise with a solid home win here.

Arsenal v Sheffield United

  • Venue: Emirates Stadium
  • Saturday 18 January 15:00
  • Referee: Mike Dean
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 5/6 D: 13/5 A: 17/5

About the Game:

Arsenal come into this one without their top-score, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang suspended for the next three matches. They have only won one of their last seven home games, and Mikel Arteta is hoping for the second win on the bounce at the Emirates. It will be difficult and it remains to be seen where the goals will come from.

Sheffield United have a great away record for a promoted side, although they do love a draw. It currently stands at 3-6-2, demonstrating they are a very difficult side to beat. Indeed, their two away losses have come against City and Liverpool, a rather impressive stat. Arsenal will have their hands full in this one.

Prediction: Draw – Sheffield United will be to stout in defence, and Arsenal won’t be able to break them down.

Brighton v Aston Villa

  • Venue: Amex Stadium
  • Saturday 18 January 15:00
  • Referee: Andy Madley
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 63/100 D: 16/5 A: 4/1

About the Game:

Brighton have been flirting with relegation all season, as their performances have been very up and down. They have only one win in seven PL games, so it is no wonder they find themselves in this predicament. They will be boosted by the fact Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Adam Webster, Shane Duffy, and Aaron Mooy are all available for selection.

Villa are three points behind their hosts, so a victory would bring them level. They have been in dreadful form as of late and really need to arrest their slide. Top-scored Jack Grealish can only do so much and will need the support of his teammates. Jonathan Kodija is ruled out, and Tom Heaton and Wesley are both sidelined for the long-term.

Prediction: Draw – The stakes are high, and so will be the tension. A cagey affair ending in the draw.

Manchester City v Crystal Palace

  • Venue: Etihad Stadium
  • Saturday 18 January 15:00
  • Referee: Graham Scott
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 1/12 D: 10/1 A:28/1

About the Game:

Man City come into this game looking to win their fourth on the trot in the league. They have begun to show their Champion’s class and last week demolished Villa. They have little chance of the title but still have ambitions of finishing second, so they need to keep producing the goods.

Palace will be looking for a repeat of last season’s 3-2 epic win. Even so, their form of late has been very sketchy. They have drawn three in a row, yet have only one win in seven, and they got knocked out of the FA Cup to Derby. They are still pretty comfortable in the league, but even so, they will want to turn it around soon enough.

Prediction: City to win (-1) – The Citizens will produce another strong display and blow the Eagles away.

Norwich v Bournemouth
Norwich Form Guide WLWWD

  • Venue: Carrow Road
  • Saturday 18 January 15:00
  • Referee: Paul Tierney
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 6/5 D: 5/2 A: 11/5

About the Game:

The bottom sides meet in what can only be termed as a ‘must-win’ for both clubs. The Canaries haven’t won since November and are now eight points from safety. An immediate return to the second tier is seemingly imminent. Their leaky defence has been their undoing, with a whopping 45 goals conceded so far this season.

Bournemouth need to start winning and scoring rather soon! They have two goals in their past eight PL games and only one win in twelve. It is definitely relegation form and it could be the end of Eddie Howe if they lose this one. They have only lost two of their last 14 league games against Norwich, but history counts for nothing in these contests.

Prediction: Bournemouth to win – A difficult game to predict, but the Cherries might just get the points here.

Southampton v Wolves

  • Venue: St Mary’s Stadium
  • Saturday 18 January 15:00
  • Referee: Darren England
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 27/20 D: 23/10 A: 21/10

About the Game:

Southampton have won four in five league games and are rapidly rising up the table. They are now seven points above the relegation zone and have truly turned their season around. Ralph Hasenhuttl has no new injury concerns, and super striker Danny Ings will lead the line once more. The Saints’ top scorer with 14 goals has been in impressive form.

Wolves have lost four away games in a row in all competitions, and their aspirations of Europe are slowly slipping away. They have the quality in the squad, they just seem to have been unfortunate in recent weeks. Now they face another tough test by facing an in-form team.

Prediction: Southampton to win – Wolves could pull a surprise, but form would suggest the Saints to win.

West Ham United v Everton
West Ham Form Guide WDLDD

  • Venue: London Stadium
  • Saturday 18 January 15:00
  • Referee: Andre Marriner
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 2/1 D: 12/5 A: 5/4

About the Game:

David Moyes faces the visit of his former side, and one who is was reportedly close to re-joining before Ancelotti was named as their manager. West Ham got a 4-0 victory last time out and will be hoping to replicate that on Saturday. They could be without Felipe Anderson and Michail Antonio, which would be a blow.

Everton have won three in four PL games under the Italian and will see this games as a big opportunity to close the gap to the top half of the table. The feel good factor has returned to the squad. They have won seven of their past 11 PL away games at West Ham, and have an impressive record against the Hammers.

Prediction: Everton to win – They get one back against their old boss in impressive style.

Newcastle v Chelsea
Newcastle Form Guide LDDDW
Chelsea Form Guide WWLWD
  • Venue: St James’ Park
  • Saturday 18 January 17:30
  • Referee: Chris Kavanagh
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 5/1 D: 7/2 A: 52/100

About the Game:

Newcastle come into this one without a win in four league games, and are only five points above the drop zone. The league is very tight this year, so even though they are 13th they still need to be picking up points more often. Steve Bruce has never fared well against Chelsea, however, and has won just one of his 22 PL games against them, losing 16.

Chelsea are still fourth in the league, and continue to pepper the odd bad performance with good ones. With such a young team, the inconsistency is to be expected. Even so, they have still performed better than expected and they have certainly been boosted by Tammy Abraham’s 13 goals. They should be winning this one, yet it is a typical banana skin for them.

Prediction: Chelsea to win – The Blues should take all three points here, but a draw could alos be on the cards.

Burnley v Leicester

  • Venue: Turf Moor
  • Sunday 19 January 14:00
  • Referee: Anthony Taylor
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 16/5 D: 27/10 A: 17/20

About the Game:

Burnley are another team whose form has escaped them. They have lost four in a row in the league, only scoring once in that span. They sit in 15th just three points above the drop zone. They will be without Ashley Barnes who faces a spell on the sideline with a hernia injury. An interesting stat is that the have gone 18 home games without a draw.

Leicester have lost three of the last five games, yet two of those were against City and Liverpool. Even so, they will want to return to form and carry on their winning ways. They should win this one, they will look to Jamie Vardy who leads the league with 17 goals, and James Maddison who has created 25 chances from set pieces this season.

Prediction: Leicester to win – The Foxes will win their third away game in a row with a Vardy goal.
