Premier League Matchday 27 Preview – Prediction + Tips 2018/19

The EPL took a back seat over the last two weeks as the FA Cup and Champions League took centre stage. Not to fear though, as the action returns to our screens this Friday, where Cardiff will host Watford, and West Ham host Fulham.

Some fixtures have been postponed due to Chelsea and Manchester City’s EFL Cup final taking place this Sunday. Those two teams, together with their intended opponents, Everton and Brighton, will not feature in the EPL this weekend.

Match of the Day

Liverpool will play the game in hand they have over Manchester City here and have the chance to go top once again. That adds another level of interest to one of the world’s biggest rivalries.

About the Game:

Manchester United put the defeat against PSG behind them with a comprehensive win against Chelsea in the FA Cup last weekend. United are still on fire under Solksjaer, with Paul Pogba getting better and better.

Pogba was instrumental against Chelsea, but despite his best efforts, his main impact on the game against PSG was to be red carded and miss the second leg later this month. Nevertheless, there’s no disputing Pogba’s form of late. The Frenchman is scoring and assisting almost at will, but this is another match against a top team where it will be interesting to see how much he can influence the game. The goals have dried up just a little for Marcus Rashford. The striker may be forced to play alongside Romelu Lukaku here, as injuries to both Martial and Jesse Lingard will force a reshuffle from Solksjaer in upcoming matches. The biggest question is how well will United’s defence fare? Despite impressive results, United are still leaking goals, and are up against one of the league’s best attacks here.

Liverpool too had a frustrating first leg of their Champions League knocköut game. Held at home by Bayern, the Reds now have a daunting task on their hand to see themselves through to the quarter finals.

There is massive motivation for Klopp here. Liverpool will regain their spot at the top of the table if they win. However, the Reds have shown themselves to fall in the face of opportunity numerous times already this season. That’s not to mention that this is one of the fiercest rivalries in all of world football. Klopp will welcome back van Dijk into his defence after the Dutchman missed the match against Bayern due to suspension. Defensively, Liverpool will be better then, but the attacking trio will need to do more than they did midweek. Bayern did a great job of containing Liverpool, and Solksjaer will surely have taken notes from that match.

Prediction: Both teams to score – United and Solksjaer will have learned from the mistakes against PSG and have a real chance of beating Liverpool. We could see fireworks in this game.

Rest of the Premier League Games

There’s a limited round of fixtures thanks to the EFL Cup being played this weekend. We start with two fixtures on Friday night, while the action goes all the way through to Sunday.

Cardiff v Watford

  • Venue: Cardiff City Stadium
  • Friday 22 February 19:45
  • Referee: Roger East
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 2/1 D: 11/5 A: 11/8

About the Game:

Cardiff have dragged themselves out of the drop zone but the real work starts here. Keeping themselves out of it will be tough, with a number of teams fighting not to be caught in that final drop spot. Back-to-back wins for the first time in the EPL is a cause for optimism though, but can the Seagulls make it three?

Watford continued their push for seventh spot with a win and have a favourable fixture here, despite playing away from home. Jose Holebas is suspended, while it will be interesting to see who Gracia opts for up front.

Prediction: Watford Draw no bet – Cardiff were lucky to win their last match and we don’t see them being able to repeat that feat against a top side.

West Ham v Fulham

  • Venue: London Stadium
  • Friday 22 February 19:45
  • Referee: Lee Mason
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 5/6 D: 11/4 A: 3/1

About the Game:

The Hammers followed up their immensely impressive draw against Liverpool with a less impressive one against Crystal Palace. West Ham are improving though and things are looking up, with players returning from injury. If Marko Arnautovic can stay fit, the Hammers could have a field day here.

Fulham look increasingly likely to go down and simply can’t lose here. The Cottagers face top six teams in all their remaining home games, which is a terrifying prospect. Whether those home games still constitute their best chance to pick up points is open to interpretation, but whatever the case, Ranieri needs to pick up points fast, and pull off what would be classed as another miracle.

Prediction: West Ham Win – We don’t expect any surprises here, as West Ham seem to be improving with each game.

Burnley v Tottenham

  • Venue: Turf Moor
  • Saturday 23 February 12:30
  • Referee: Mike Dean
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 4/1 D: 11/4 A: 4/6

About the Game:

Burnley’s spectacular run continues and they are one of the teams matching the incredible form of today’s opponents. We thought the Clarets were a little lucky to keep getting results early on, but they’ve now done more than enough to prove that it is not all down to luck. This is a very tough game though against a team both inform and high on confidence.

Spurs were magnificent last week against Dortmund and, barring a total slipup, will surely go through in the Champions League. They continue to succeed without Harry Kane and have space between themselves and fourth placed Manchester United. They really are keeping pace with the leaders, but this will be a very tough test.

Prediction: Tottenham Win – This will not be easy, with Burnley in similar form to Spurs. But, Spurs have proved that they are still a great team without Kane and are having no problems scoring goals.

Bournemouth v Wolves

  • Venue: Dean Court
  • Saturday 23 February 15:00
  • Referee: Simon Hooper
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 17/10 D: 9/4 A: 8/5

About the Game:

Bournemouth have had a tough run for a long time now, after a great first quarter of the season. Eddie Howe will be looking ahead on the fixture list, where the games do ease up in difficulty in the near future. This is not one of those games, with Wolves already established as a true EPL pedigree team, but Bournemouth have every chance of a victory at home.

Wolves have made seventh spot their own, but Bournemouth are one of the many teams trying to claw it away from them. Wolves only just avoided defeat against Newcastle in their last match, but they had won the three games prior. A win in the FA Cup put them back on track and they will fancy themselves here.

Prediction: Over 2.5 goals – Wolves are unbeaten in five in all competitions, but Bournemouth usually score and concede at home.

Newcastle v Huddersfield

  • Venue: St James’ Park
  • Saturday 23 February 15:00
  • Referee: Kevin Friend
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 5/6 D: 12/5 A: 7/2

About the Game:

Newcastle were seconds away from an important three points in their last match. A last minute equaliser was painful at the time, but could have a huge effect on where they end up this season. Either way, they must put that behind them, because they have what is, on paper at least, the easiest fixture of the season here, and a great chance to get three points.

Huddersfield need nothing short of a miracle. In truth, I imagine planning for a season in the Championship next year is already well underway. Without a win in weeks, confidence is extremely low, and losing to a direct relegation contender would be a double blow.

Prediction: Newcastle Win – The Magpies have been playing some good football in recent weeks and have mostly gotten the results they deserve. That should continue here.

Leicester v Crystal Palace
Leicester Form Guide LLLLL

  • Venue: King Power Stadium
  • Saturday 23 February 17:30
  • Referee: Anthony Taylor
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 23/20 D: 23/10 A: 12/5

About the Game:

A look at Leicester’s recent results shows you what kind of form the Foxes are in. No wins in five isn’t acceptable for a team fighting to be close to the top six. Leicester do have a very good run of fixtures starting here though, so a win could set them off on a good run.

Conversely, Palace are unbeaten in their last three matches. The Eagles are certainly not safe in the league yet, and will still need to pick up points. But, the January signings seem to already have settled and added an extra dimension to the team, who may fancy their chances here.

Prediction: Both teams to score – Both teams will fancy themselves for the win here and have enough attacking firepower to find the net.

Arsenal v Southampton

  • Venue: The Emriates
  • Sunday 24 February 14:05
  • Referee: Graham Scott
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 9/10 D: 7/2 A: 11/2

About the Game:

Arsenal fell to a surprising defeat in the Europa League as their away form continues to haunt them. The Gunners are back at the Emirates here though, but do face an inform team with everything to play for.

The manner of defeat must still sting the Saints, who, after drawing level with minutes left to play against fellow strugglers Cardiff, then conceded again to lose in the dying seconds. That defeat was very costly, seeing them fall back into the relegation zone, and they will need to put in a fantastic defensive shift just to get anything from this match.

Prediction: Arsenal Win – The Gunners are an impressive attacking force at home and should have more than enough to win.
