Premier League Matchday 28 Preview – Prediction + Tips 2018/19

The EPL sees a full midweek schedule taking place, after a weekend that saw a manager lose his job and Liverpool return to the top of the league.

The tie of the week is surely Chelsea vs Spurs, as the Blues look to atone for their EFL Cup final defeat. Elsewhere, there are some key fixtures in the title race as the top teams can not afford any slip-ups. We are in for a busy week, as every team is set to play.

Match of the Day

Chelsea host Spurs at Stamford Bridge in what is shaping up to be a feisty London Derby. The Blues need a morale-boosting victory whilst Tottenham are hoping to keep pace at the top.

About the Game:

Chelsea lost to Man City in the EFL Cup final on Sunday, but the talking point will be Kepa Arrizabalaga’s refusal to be substituted near the end of the game. Sarri’s apparent lack of authority over his players could mean a loss in this game could be the end of his reign.

Despite this, Chelsea did produce a spirited performance and held City 0-0 through 120 minutes. They did lack some creative spark, but Hazard demonstrated his ability, whilst Kante and the oft-maligned Jorginho produced commanding displays. If they can carry this type of guile into Wednesday’s fixture they have a good chance of picking up points. Even so, it remains to be seen if Kepa will feature, and what effect his actions will have on the squad as a whole. It is something that has never happened in English football before and it will be intriguing as to how Sarri responds.

Tottenham had a catastrophic weekend by losing to Burnley. Victory would have put them only three points off top spot, and despite Harry Kane’s return with a goal, they threw their chance away.

If Spurs want any chance of challenging for the title, then a victory on Wednesday is a must. Before their defeat to Burnley, they had won four in a row and were grinding out results despite the mounting injuries. In their past two games against Chelsea, they have won 3-1 and could produce a similar performance here. They will again look to their talisman Harry Kane, whilst also hoping Eriksen and Son continue to produce. Spurs will be hoping the weekend was just a blip, and a win would signal that they aren’t ready to give up on their title hopes just yet. They still remain outsiders but could sneak under the radar if they continue to pick up three points every week.

Prediction: Tottenham to win – Chelsea lack discipline and Sarri’s authority is compromised. We expect a flat performance from the Blues. Sarri could be gone after this one.

Rest of the Premier League Games

With a full fixture list for the Tuesday and Wednesday games we have lots to cover. Let’s get right down to the nitty-gritty and check out our first preview below.

Cardiff v Everton

  • Venue: Cardiff City Stadium
  • Tuesday 26 February 19:45
  • Referee: Kevin Friend
  • Quick Glance Odds H:13/5 D: 9/4 A: 23/20

About the Game:

Cardiff are one point above the relegation zone and every game is a battle to stay in the top flight. After getting hammered against Watford, they’ll be looking to put in a shift and get one over Everton. Every point is vital, so expect Warnock’s men to be raring to go in this one.

Everton are in disastrous form and are in real danger of being dragged into a relegation scrap. Defeat here would leave them seriously looking over their shoulders. Nothing suggests they will have the capacity to win on Tuesday night. With only three wins in fifteen PL games, they really need to turn it round.

Prediction: Draw – Everton are in dreadful form but Cardiff don’t inspire us with confidence. A draw seems like a real possibility in this one.

Huddersfield v Wolves

  • Venue: John Smith’s Stadium
  • Tuesday 26 February 19:45
  • Referee: David Coote
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 15/4 D: 5/2 A: 4/5

About the Game:

There’s not really much left to be said about Huddersfield’s season and the sooner it ends the better for them. They rarely score and concede a boat load of goals. With only two wins all season, albeit one against Wolves, there is not much hope for them.

Wolves battled back to draw against Bournemouth at the weekend and will be looking for an easy three points in order to help in their battle for the ‘best of the rest’ (7th place). We can’t see any other outcome here as Wolves’ impressive season continues. They really have won plaudits with their style of play so far.

Prediction: Wolves Win (-1 handicap) – We don’t expect any surprises here, this could turn into a rout for the Wanderers.

Leicester v Brighton

  • Venue: King Power Stadium
  • Tuesday 26 February 19:45
  • Referee: Lee Probert
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 19/20 D: 23/10 A: 16/5

About the Game:

Leicester’s weekend defeat to Palace, in a game where they largely dominated in spells, signaled the end for Claude Puel. They haven’t won in six, and coupled with an alleged rift with Jamie Vardy, it was enough to see him get the sack. Coaches Mike Stowell and Adam Sadler will be in temporary charge for the game.

Brighton are looking to stave off the threat of relegation, but their away form this season leaves a lot to be desired. With only two wins away and only three points above the relegation zone, they desperately need to start improving. After having not played since 16th Feb they will be well rested, and this is the only thing working in their favour.

Prediction: Leicester Win – With a new manager comes new fortune. The foxes will win this one with Brighton edging closer to the bottom three.

Newcastle v Burnley

  • Venue:
  • Tuesday 26 February 20:00
  • Referee: Craig Pawson
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 23/20 D: 23/10 A: 14/5

About the Game:

Newcastle are continuing there mini-revival under Rafa Benitez and now sit four points above the relegation zone. With the Clarets just ahead of them, this is a key game in the relegation battle. In the reverse fixture, the Magpies took all three points and will be hoping for more of the same when they face off on Tuesday.

Burnley are on a eight game unbeaten run, which is their best in the top-flight since 1966. Sean Dyche is once again doing a wonderful job of ensuring the Clarets stay in the league for another year. Led by James Tarkowski, Chirs Wood, and Tom Heaton, the Burnley boys are on fire at the moment and they will take some stopping.

Prediction: Draw – Both teams will cancel each other out and will settle for a draw. Not the best outcome, but acceptable for both managers.

Arsenal v Bournemouth

  • Venue: The Emirates
  • Wednesday 27 February 19:45
  • Referee: Chris Kavanagh
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 19/40 D: 15/4 A: 6/1

About the Game:

Arsenal returned tot the top four with victory over Southampton at the weekend. Despite some indifferent results, Arsenal have improved recently and Unai Emery has been doing a decent job. Mesut Ozil is still an enigma, and it remains to be seen if he will feature heavily for the Gunners in the run in.

Bournemouth are dreadful away from home. They have only won three times, losing 10. With their last away victory being in October against a very poor Fulham side. Indeed, that was their last point taken away. If they ever want to be more than just a mid-table side, they have to improve here.

Prediction: Arsenal Win (-2 handicap) – Bournemouth are so bad away from home its laughable. We are so confident in Arsenal we’d suggest using a handicap.

Southampton v Fulham
Soton Form Guide LLLLL

  • Venue: St Marys’
  • Wednesday 27 February 19:45
  • Referee: Anthony Taylor
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 10/11 D: 13/5 A: 100/30

About the Game:

Just when Southampton were beginning to look like they could put a decent run together, they have lost two on the bounce. There’s no better remedy than facing a poor Fulham side. If they don’t win this one they deserve to go down, as these are the type of games they have to win.

If Fulham ever needed a win, this game would be it. They are already hanging on by the skin of their teeth, and thanks to the cheeky hand of Chicarito, they are really desperate. It could be a close game, but Fulham will need an early goal to put the pressure on the Saints.

Prediction: Southampton Win – It will be a close game and it could go either way, but Fulham are poor and never seem to be able to close out a game.

Crystal Palace v Manchester United
Crystal Palace Form Guide WDLDD
Man U Form Guide WWWLW
  • Venue: Selhurst Park
  • Wednesday 27 February 20:00
  • Referee: Martin Atkinson
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 11/5 D: 12/5 A: 11/8

About the Game:

Palace and Roy Hodgson played a masterful tactical game against Leicester at the weekend, sitting deep, attacking on the break, and scoring their chances when they had them, they’ll need to do more of the same on Wednesday.

United racked up a host of injuries against Liverpool, using all three of their subs before half-time. What’s more Rashford carried a knock, and Matic didn’t even start. They could be banged up and that is the only chance Palace have, as the Red Devils remain unbeaten in the league with the Baby-Faced Assassin in charge.

Prediction: United Win – Even with the injuries, United are playing too well to let that faze them. It won’t be easy, but they should win.

Liverpool v Watford
Liverpool Form Guide LDDDW
Watford Form Guide WWLWD
  • Venue: Anfield
  • Wednesday 27 February 20:00
  • Referee: Graham Scott
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 1/4 D: 11/2 A: 12/1

About the Game:

Let’s face it, since the new year Liverpool haven’t been at their best and have seen a seven-point lead at the top of the table whittled down to one. They cannot afford a slip up against the smaller teams, and an emphatic win here would send a message to their North-West rivals.

Watford are having a good season by their standards, which let’s be honest isn’t necessarily saying too much. Nevertheless, they sit in seventh, which is the most they could hope for. A win against Liverpool will go down well for Javi Garci, whose stock is rising.

Prediction: Liverpool Win – The Reds needs a big win here to stave off pressure from City. We think they will do it in style.

Manchester City v West Ham
Man C Form Guide DDWLL
West Ham Form Guide LWDLL
  • Venue: The Etihad
  • Wednesday 27 February 20:00
  • Referee: Stuart Attwell
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 1/6 D: 15/2 A: 16/1

About the Game:

Man City are coming off an EFL Cup final victory. Although they needed penalties to do it, they are still on course for an unprecedented quadruple. They will easily beat West Ham and move on to the next game without much thought.

West Ham got back to winning ways with victory over Fulham at the weekend. It will take something special to repeat that on Wednesday. Even another handball goal won’t help them. This will be a typical Hammers performance of getting rolled-over by the big boys.

Prediction: Man City win (-2 handicap) – This is one of those games where you have to guess how much City will win by. We were tempted to do a -3 handicap, but chose -2 just to be safe.
