Premier League Matchday 3 Preview – Prediction + Tips 2018/19

There weren’t too many shocks last weekend despite some explosive football. The two teams most think will go head to head for the title, Liverpool and Manchester City, both made it two wins from two, while Arsenal and Manchester United are already off the pace.

West Ham will have it tough once again as they look to pick up their first points of the season, while Huddersfield will see a home match against Cardiff as a great opportunity to get off the mark.

Match of the Day

Manchester United fans are quickly getting more frustrated at both their team’s performances and their manager. A lack of effort seemed to be a problem in the away defeat to Brighton and that is simply unacceptable. Spurs meanwhile made easy work of Fulham to make it two wins from two.

About the Game:

Despite the lack of signings and pre-season jitters, United managed to win their opening game of the season, suggesting it was all a case of much ado about nothing. That all came unstuck last weekend though, when the team were picked apart and easily defeated by Brighton.

Eric Bailly had a particularly poor game, at fault for two Brighton goals, while Paul Pogba, perhaps increasingly affected by the constant rumours suggesting his dissatisfaction with being at the club, was once again far from the player we know he can be. Just two games into the season, fans are already frustrated at the team and manager, while the manager and players are frustrated at each other. After neighbours Manchester City and rivals Liverpool have both started so well, United could find themselves in deep water soon. They are at home here and must make that advantage count. Mourinho was denied the signing of a centre-back in the summer, so it is up to those already at the club to improve. Alexis Sanchez was a big loss last weekend but could miss out through injury again, while Nemanja Matic could return to the team.

Tottenham were even quieter in the transfer market, becoming the first team to make no summer signings. But that hasn’t seemed to matter, as they’ve made it two wins from their first two games.

Harry Kane finally broke his August duck as Spurs comfortably beat new boys Fulham last week. Despite the lack of signings, Tottenham have had somewhat of a new look about them so far this season. Toby Alderweireld has returned to the starting lineup with Pochettino favouring a back three, allowing his full-backs to roam further up the field. Lucas Moura has started in a more attacking role, which has pushed Christian Eriksen into a deeper playmaker role. Moura rewarded his manager with a goal last week and he has looked among the liveliest of Spur’s players. He, along with Alli and of course Kane, will be the trouble makers for Manchester United, and you wouldn’t put it past any of them to get on the scoresheet again.

Prediction: Tottenham Draw no bet – Spurs are more settled, organised and playing well. Conversely, there is turmoil on and off the pitch in Manchester, which will make getting a result here all the more difficult.

Rest of the Premier League Games

Our match of the day takes place on Monday night, with the rest of the action spanning Saturday and Sunday. Wolves have the toughest task, taking on Manchester City, while there is a big chance for Huddersfield to earn their first points of the season.

  • Quick Glance Odds H: 10/1 D: 11/2 A: 2/9

About the Game:

Wolves haven’t really gotten going yet and haven’t met the expectations many had for them. It’s unlikely they will have much chance to do so here, as they face last season’s champions, who put six goals past a helpless Huddersfield last weekend.

Manchester City made a real statement of intent after the news that Kevin de Bruyne will be out for around two months. David Silva returned to the side and was fantastic and many will be expecting another cricket scoreline in favour of the Citizens here.

Prediction: Manchester City -2 Handicap – They might not manage six goals again, but it’s extremely likely that, despite being away from home, Manchester City will win by a big margin.

Arsenal v West Ham

  • Saturday 25 August 15:00
  • Referee: Graham Scott
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 4/11 D: 4/1 A: 13/2

About the Game:

A cruel defeat to neighbours Chelsea meant that it’s no points from two games for the Gunners. There were many signs of improvement though and better finishing would have likely earned Arsenal the win. The fixtures turn for the better starting here and a win against London rivals West Ham could set the Gunners off on a strong run of results.

West Ham let a goal advantage slip in the second half at home to Bournemouth last weekend. Poor defending was again the cause of the defeat and with the attacking firepower Arsenal have, it’s difficult to see West Ham taking anything away from the Emirates.

Prediction: Arsenal win – West Ham bought well during the summer, but until they organise their backline, they will continue to concede too many goals.

Bournemouth v Everton

  • Quick Glance Odds H:8/5 D: 11/5 A: 7/4

About the Game:

Two wins from two is a magnificent achievement for a team that are notorious slow starters. The manner of victory last weekend will add extra encouragement and Bournmeouth may see themselves as genuine top ten contenders this season. A win against a team with even higher ambitions would be a great statement of intent.

Everton were shocking in pre-season but they’ve turned it on when it mattered. They too have won their opening two fixtures and have new man Richarilson to thank. The summer signing has been electric and already has three goals to his name.

Prediction: Both teams to score – Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson and Everton’s Richarlison are bringing the goals and we see this one being an entertaining spectacle.

Huddersfield v Cardiff

  • Referee: Michael Oliver
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 5/4 D: 21/10 A: 12/5

About the Game:

A mauling by Manchester City won’t have done Huddersfield’s confidence any good, but they have the best possible opportunity to get back on track here, as they host Cardiff, a team tipped by most to be in the relegation zone at the end of the season.

Despite a man advantage, Cardiff couldn’t find the win against Newcastle last week. They showed that they are tough to beat at home though, which is where their season will be won or lost. Nevertheless, Huddersfield are certainly one of the league’s weaker teams and there should be nothing for Cardiff to fear here.

Prediction: Under 2.5 goals – Two teams happier defending than attacking will play out a dull, but potentially important game.

  • Quick Glance Odds H: 13/10 D: 11/5 A: 11/5

About the Game:

Southampton were second best to Everton last week. The good news is that new boy Danny Ings got on the scoresheet. Despite a number of attackers at the club, none has held down a regular place or maintained good form. Ings could be just the man for the job to be a consistent scorer for the Saints.

Leicester made easy work of Wolves last week after once again playing some decent football. The bad news for the Foxes is that Jamie Vardy saw red and will be suspended, but Kelchi Iheanacho will be eagerly awaiting the opportunity.

Prediction: Leicester Draw no bet – Playing away from home doesn’t faze Leicester and we have a feeling they will be a real handful for Southampton.

Liverpool v Brighton

  • Venue: Anfield
  • Saturday 25 August 17:30
  • Referee: Chris Kavanagh
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 1/6 D: 6/1 A: 14/1

About the Game:

It wasn’t necessarily easy, but Liverpool showed they can dig in and grind out a victory away from home in tricky fixtures. Liverpool look settled and comfortable all over the pitch and will surely continue their incredible home form here.

Brighton’s win against Manchester United will give them confidence, but this is a tougher task. Keeping it tight for as long as possible will be the target, but it really will require a monumental effort from everyone to take something away from Anfield.

Prediction: Liverpool -2 Asian Handicap – Liverpool’s record at Anfield stretching back over six months is formidable and they should emerge comfortable winners.

Watford v Crystal Palace

  • Venue: Vicarage Road
  • Sunday 26 August 13:30
  • Referee: Anthony Taylour
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 6/4 D: 11/5 A: 15/8

About the Game:

Watford surprised many by beating Burnley away from home last weekend. The Hornets have a good squad and a capable manager, so they could be a surprise package for the season. They will meet a team with similar ambitions here in what could be a very watchable match.

Crystal Palace should be commended for their performance against Liverpool last week, where they fought hard and refused to be intimidated. The defeat was compounded by a straight red card for right-back Wan Bissaka who will be a loss here, but Palace will still play their attacking brand of football.

Prediction: Both teams to score – This could be a great game and with both teams playing flowing football and scoring goals, we see both teams finding the back of the net.

Fulham v Burnley

  • Venue: Craven Cottage
  • Sunday 26 August 16:00
  • Referee: David Coote
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 1/1 D: 11/5 A: 3/1

About the Game:

Fulham have had a harsh introduction to the realities of life in the Premier League. Two games and two defeats is tough considering they have played well on the whole, but Burnley are a stubborn opposition who will want to improve after a defeat last week.

Defeat at home is a rarity from Burnley, but that’s exactly what happened last week, as they conceded three goals no less. Sean Dyche will know that despite just being promoted, Fulham are no pushovers, so this could be another closely fought battle.

Prediction: Fulham Draw no bet – Fulham have played well on the whole and with home advantage against opponents distracted with Europa League commitments, this is a great shot at their first win of the season.

Newcastle v Chelsea

  • Venue: St James’ Park
  • Sunday 26 August 16:00
  • Referee: Paul Tierrny
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 4/1 D: 11/4 A: 4/6

About the Game:

The Magpies earned a point away from home last weekend, but they had a man sent off and also missed a penalty. Things aren’t too rosey in Newcastle and if the results don’t start coming then fan dissatisfaction will grow. This is another tough test.

Chelsea played well again and were on the whole deserving winners against Arsenal. However, their defensive frailities were uncovered time and time again, so Newcastle could take the game to the Blues and cause them problems.

Prediction: Both teams to score – Chelsea are much better going forward than defending so we see goals from both teams as Newcastle look to exploit their weaknesses at the back.
