Premier League Matchday 30 Preview – Prediction + Tips 2017/18

After midweek Champions League fixtures saw Liverpool and Manchester City make it through to the next round, Tottenham were the unlucky team to crash out of the competition at the hands of Juventus. But all three of those teams return straight back to action as the Premier League returns this weekend with more cracking fixtures.

That means our previews and betting tips are back, after we nailed it last week with ten correct bets out of ten. No pressure for this week then! As we look to keep up the good work, there are a number of key fixtures this week. Manchester United and Liverpool square off in the race for second place, while the winners of the matches between Huddersfield and Swansea, and Newcastle and Southampton, will both take a big step towards survival.

Match of the Day

Two teams vying for second place in the Premier League meet head to head on Saturday lunchtime as Manchester United host Liverpool. The reverse fixture of this match was a rather dull goalless draw in which Mourinho succeeded in his efforts to stifle Liverpool.

About the Game:

Mourinho’s approach of stifling opponents has been regularly criticised throughout his career and that criticism has continued this season. Never one to bow to the pressure of the masses, it’s very possible he will adopt such an approach here, with a draw a better result for United, as they currently enjoy a two point advantage over the visitors.

That owes a lot to the second half comeback against Crystal Palace on Monday night, in which three second half goals, the last of which was a last minute volley from Nemanja Matic, rescued the Red Devils. But there are problems on the pitch. Paul Pogba, another who has received criticism this year, was again poor, and Mourinho’s purchase of Alexis Sanchez and the resulting attempts to squeeze him into a team packed full of superstars is, at the moment, resulting in disjointed performances. With a number of key injuries in defence, along with the vital second leg of the Champions League fixture against Seville following just three days after this match, the pressure is really on United here.

Bet on the match of the week between Manchester United and Liverpool at Betway

Liverpool must have thought they’d be headed into this one sitting in second place until Matic’s aforementioned late winner. Nevertheless, a win will put Liverpool right back in second spot and in the driving seat to take one of the remaining Champions League spots.

Safely qualified for the next round of the Champions League, Liverpool can go into this fully focused. This will be their third match in a week however, after they played the second leg of the Champions League fixture against Porto on Tuesday, while United will play Sevilla next week. Klopp was able to rest a few key players from that match and the manager pointed out earlier this year that due to rotation earlier in the season, his team are fully fit as we head into this point in the season. The Reds have lost just three times in the league this year, though all of them have been away from home. A draw was all they could muster from the reverse fixture of this match back in October last year, but with Mourinho’s defence currently disrupted by injury, Salah, Firmino and Mane will be looking to do what they couldn’t do last time and find the back of the net. Who would bet against them doing just that?

Prediction: Over 1.5 goals – All ten of the last matches between these teams at Old Trafford have featured over 1.5 goals. While United will keep it tight and maybe even play for the draw, we expect a couple of goals in what is always a closely fought rivalry.

Rest of the Premier League Games

The crunch matches continue at the other end of the table too, where the match between Newcastle and Southampton, as well as Huddersfield against Swansea, take on significant importance in regards to the relegation battle. Our match of the week is the early kick-off on Saturday, while the action goes right through to Monday evening where struggling Stoke will host Manchester City.

Everton v Brighton

  • Venue: Goodison Park
  • Saturday 10 March 15:00
  • Referee: Roger East
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 23/20 D: 21/20 A: 13/5

About the Game:

The tension isn’t easing at Goodison after another defeat for Everton last week against Burnley. Somehow Brighton are now above Everton in the table on goal difference and nether team is mathematically safe. That tension, the threat of relegation and Brighton’s great form should hopefully ensure that what could have been a boring mid-table battle has something of an edge to it.

A great run of form sees Brighton overtake Everton and sit nicely in tenth place. They’ve taken huge steps to staying up and should now do so. A win here, while not ensuring mathematical safety, should see the Seagulls safe, giving Hughton and his men every incentive to really go for this one.

Prediction: Both teams to score – Everton have to perform in front of their own fans, while Brighton are on a fantastic run of form.

Huddersfield v Swansea

  • Venue: Kirklees Stadium
  • Saturday 10 March 15:00
  • Referee: Michael Oliver
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 29/20 D: 21/20 A: 2/1

About the Game:

Huddersfield could do little to stop Tottenham at the weekend, but their back-to-back wins before that game and the two winnable home games they have in front of them here should provide the boost they need. Crystal Palace follow this match and if the Terriers can win both of these, they will be just a couple of points from safety.

Swansea’s turn around continued last week with an emphatic win against fellow strugglers West Ham. The transformation under Carvalhal has been remarkable and the Swans have lost just one of their last seven matches, winning four of them. Swansea sit on the same number of points as Huddersfield in 13th place here, so the value of three points here cannot be understated.

Prediction: Swansea Draw no bet – Huddersfield will be well up for this one in front of their own fans, but Swansea too have all the motivation they need, but critically, they have the form to match it.

Newcastle v Southampton

  • Venue: St Jame’s Park
  • Saturday 10 March 15:00
  • Referee:Andre Marriner
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 13/8 D: 21/10 A: 7/4

About the Game:

Newcastle face Southampton in another relegation battle six pointer on Saturday. The Magpies are actually on a fairly decent run, but winning games is proving difficult, as Newcastle have repeatedly been unable to see out games.

Southampton are one point behind Newcastle and out of the relegation zone by just a single point. Like the hosts, the Saints just can’t seem to win matches. Away from home, a draw would be the better result for Southampton, but the Saints will be weary of a difficult run in of games and must look to pick up points quickly.

Prediction: Under 2.5 goals – Both teams are draw specialists and not firing in front of goal of late. That should continue here in what will likely be a nervy encounter.

West Brom v Leicester

  • Venue: The Hawthorns
  • Saturday 10 March 15:00
  • Referee: Bobby Madley
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 15/8 D: 11/5 A: 6/4

About the Game:

As tight as the relegation battle is, West Brom are the one team who seem all but assured to go down. Seven points adrift of 19th place, the Baggies have lost their last five. Leicester haven’t won for five games either but with problems both on and off the pitch, along with the threat of relegation looming large, West Brom will be feeling the pressure much more.

Leicester snatched a point against Bournemouth on Saturday with an extremely late Riyad Mahrez free-kick, but the Foxes are winless in five games. Leicester have little to play for really, with no chance of going down and just a small chance of a seventh place finish at best. They do have a great run of fixtures though, so perhaps they can find the motivation to finish the season with a string of wins.

Prediction: West Brom clean sheet no – Despite not earning the best results, Leicester are still scoring goals, with Riyad Mahrez especially hitting form.

West Ham v Burnley

  • Venue: London Stadium
  • Saturday 10 March 15:00
  • Referee:Lee Mason
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 5/4 D: 21/10 A: 12/5

About the Game:

David Moyes will hope that the defeat to Swansea will not burst his team’s bubble. West Ham’s final four games are against top ten opposition, while two of the next four are against teams below them in the table. Those are must win games then, while the Hammers must also try to pick up three points here. Michail Antonio has surely done enough to earn a place in the starting lineup after two goals in two games after coming on from the bench.

Burnley finally got a win last week against Everton, after going eleven games without one. Despite that run, they never once moved from seventh spot in the table. With a win behind them, they’ll probably look to crack on against a West Ham defence that has conceded four goals in each of the last two games.

Prediction: Under 2.5 goals – West Ham have to tighten up at the back, while also knowing the importance of three points. Burnley are organised and will keep this tight knowing they should eventually find their way through a struggling West Ham defence.

Chelsea v Crystal Palace

  • Venue: Stamford Bridge
  • Saturday 10 March 17:30
  • Referee:Anthony Taylor
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 2/7 D: 4/1 A: 10/1

About the Game:

Antonio Conte was heavily criticized for the manner of defeat against Manchester City last Sunday. Chelsea barely had the ball and though they lost by a single goal, were never in the game. Four wins in five league games means they are now five points behind fourth place Tottenham. A win here is vital, though it would also give the Blues some confidence going into a testing away match against Barcelona in the Champions League.

Crystal Palace were desperately unlucky to be denied a point yet again, after a last minute goal from Manchester United snatched a draw away from the Eagles. Palace played well, but they did surrender a two goal lead at home. A tricky run has seen them lose their last three and the games don’t get any easier. Palace must pick up points or they will remain in the relegation zone after this week.

Prediction: Chelsea win – It won’t be easy, but Chelsea have to bounce back. Palace have won just two away games all season and are also low on confidence, after a string of unfortunate results.

Arsenal v Watford

Watford Form Guide WWWLW
  • Venue: Emirates
  • Sunday 11 March 13:30
  • Referee: Martin Atkinson
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 1/2 D: 10/3 A: 5/1

About the Game:

The collapse at Arsenal continues and is entering epic proportions now, with the Gunners looking shot for confidence. Four defeats in a row in all competitions and the turmoil over Wenger’s position as manager means problems both on and off the pitch plague the Gunners. Last week’s defeat to Brighton showed how easily Arsenal can be overturned and Watford are well capable of doing the same.

Watford have turned things around under Javi Gracia and have put together back-to-back wins for just the second time this season. Three on the trot would ensure survival in the league, though there’s little risk of Watford realistically going down. With Arsenal on the ropes, Gracia may fancy his chances here, but his more conservative approach has fared Watford well so far, so he will likely remain cautious.

Prediction: Both teams to score – Watford have solidifed at the back but Arsenal have the capability to score, while the Gunner’s defence is without a clean sheet in eleven league matches.

Bournemouth v Tottenham

Spurs Form Guide WWLWD
  • Venue: Vitality Stadium
  • Sunday 11 March 16:00
  • Referee: Mike Dean
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 5/1 D: 10/3 A: 1/2

About the Game:

Bournemouth were denied a win after a late, late equaliser from Riyad Mahrez last week, but the Cherries did pull off their own great escape the week before against Newcastle. Bournemouth aren’t out of the woods yet and are facing tough opposition here, but the Cherries should be fine to stay another season in the Premier League.

It wasn’t their best performance, but Tottenham earned yet another victory against a toothless Newcastle last week. However, exit from the Champions League to Juventus is a bitter pill to swallow that may have lingering effects. Despite that heartache, Spurs can now focus on the Premier League and qualifying for the competition next year. The result of this match could set the tone for the final run in of the league, so Spurs need to bounce straight back with a win.

Prediction: Tottenham win – It was typical Tottenham to hand victory to Juventus, but they can now focus on the Premiership and we expect them to take out their frustrations with a win here.

Stoke v Manchester City

  • Venue: bet365 Arena
  • Monday 12 March 20:00
  • Referee: Jonathan Moss
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 10/1 D: 11/2 A: 2/9

About the Game:

Stoke have undoubtedly improved under Paul Lambert, but the results haven’t quite followed, with the Potters draw specialists at the moment. Few will fancy Stoke here, but they are resilient of late, and will hope that rotation and fatigue from City’s Champions League match will conspire to help them pull off a result.

Easily through in the Champions League, City will likely look to wrap the Premier League up as early as possible so that they can focus on the European Competition. A win here, then against Everton, and finally against neighbours Manchester United would seal the deal, making City champions with five games remaining.

Prediction: Manchester City win + Over 2.5 goals – With the luxury of resting players in the Champions League and insane strength in depth, City are looking to win the league quickly, starting with a win here.
