Premier League Matchday 33 Preview – Prediction + Tips 2018/19

The EPL is back on Friday just days after last week’s round of fixtures came to an end on Wednesday.

Manchester United were the only top side not to win last week, with a costly defeat away to Wolves. They are one of a number of teams not playing this week due to the weekend’s FA Cup semi-final fixtures, so we’ll see just six games taking place between Friday and Monday.

Match of the Day

We’ll have to wait until Monday for our match of the day as Chelsea host West Ham in a London derby.

  • Venue: Stamford Bridge
  • Monday 08 April 20:00
  • Referee: Chris Kavanagh
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 1/3 D: 9/2 A: 13/2

About the Game:

We saw two different Chelsea teams in the two games they played in the last week. The first, a game in which they struggled against Cardiff, winning only via two very late (and one offside) goals, showed the troubles Chelsea are having under Sarri and why most expect them to finish outside the top four. The second was much better, with Chelsea brushing aside Brighton and putting themselves level on points with Arsenal, outside of the top four on goal difference only. Things can change so quickly in football.

Had Chelsea lost that first match, as they looked certain to, then things would look much different now. Eden Hazard’s presence had much to do with the turnaround in performance, but Hudson Odoi, finally given a start under Sarri, was also impressive. Olivier Giroud also got on the scoresheet, reminding Sarri of his abilities. Those two players surely deserve at least a chance. Loanee Higuain has no goals in his last four, and hasn’t seem to have adapted well to the EPL. Chelsea have back-to-back wins, but that could be flattering to deceive a little. West Ham are worthy opponents, who will punish Chelsea if they play as they did against Cardiff, rather than against Brighton.

Bet on the Chelsea v West Ham game at Betway

West Ham put in one of their worst performances of the season to lose against Everton last week. Like Chelsea, the Hammers have been frustratingly inconsistent of late, with many performances simply unacceptable.

Pellegrini has options and undoubtedly talent in the squad. A dip in form from key players seems to be key here, with Marko Arnautovic perhaps the main offender. He has looked a shadow of himself since the saga of the January transfer window. Manuel Lanzini has done little since his return from injury, while Samir Nasri has been unable to keep fit. Chicharito is one of the few who has been in good form, but he was surprisingly dropped from the last match. We expect to see him return here, as the Hammers will need a cutting edge to find a break through. West Ham do seem to pick up their performances against the big teams and often prove difficult to beat. But, they will have to drastically improve if they want to take anything from this match.

Prediction: Chelsea Win – West Ham usually turn up against the big teams but something is not right with the Hammers of late. Chelsea have revitalized their chances of a top four finish with back-to-back wins, so will have an extra motivation to win here.

Rest of the Premier League Games

There are just five other games taking place this weekend, with many fixtures postponed due to the weekend’s FA Cup semi-finals taking place between four EPL teams.

Southampton v Liverpool

  • Venue: St Marys’
  • Friday 05 April 20:00
  • Referee: Paul Tierney
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 15/2 D: 15/4 A: 4/9

About the Game:

Southampton picked up an invaluable win against fellow strugglers Brighton to pull level with the Seagulls. The Saints have put a gap between them and the last dropzone place, and should need just a couple more wins for safety. While Southampton are looking much better of late, overcoming Liverpool is a different challenge altogether.

Liverpool edged past Spurs thanks to a late winner last week, but they are now second in the table, after Manchester City played and won their game in hand. It will be interesting to see how Liverpool react; whether that will take the pressure off or pile it on. Either way, Liverpool are not quite the potent attacking force they have been at other points in the season.

Prediction: Liverpool Win + Over 2.5 goals – We expect a Southampton goal here in a game that may be much closer than many would expect.

Bournemouth v Burnley

  • Venue: Dean Court
  • Saturday 15 April 15:00
  • Referee: Martin Atkinson
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 21/20 D: 5/2 A: 12/5

About the Game:

Bournemouth were disappointing against Leicester and have now won just one of their last eight matches. The Cherries are much stronger at home though where they have lost just four times this season.

An impressive win for Burnley against Wolves put distance between them and the relegation zone, as well as bringing to an end a four match losing streak. They will have to defend well here against a team that loves to attack, but Burnley are unlikely to get caught out on the counter.

Prediction: Bournemouth Win – This is a big match for Burnley who will want to ensure survival as quickly as possible, but Bournemouth are a strong attacking force at home.

Huddersfield v Leicester

  • Venue: John Smith’s Stadium
  • Saturday 06 April 15:00
  • Referee: David Coote
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 4/1 D: 5/2 A: 8/11

About the Game:

Huddersfield have been officially relegated from the Premier League and only have pride left to play for. That often leads to an upturn in form, but Huddersfield face a team in great form.

Brendan Rogers has done a great job since taking the reigns at Leicester. The Foxes have won three in a row now as they mount a challenge for seventh place. Tielemans is looking a great loan signing and has adapted instantly to the EPL, and he will be the danger man for Huddersfield here.

Prediction: Leicester Win – Leicester are in fantastic form and Rogers has sorted the Foxes out defensively too, meaning

Newcastle v Crystal Palace

  • Venue: St James’ Park
  • Saturday 06 April 15:00
  • Referee: Stuart Atwell
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 7/5 D: 11/5 A: 2/1

About the Game:

Newcastle are two points ahead of the three teams below them, and seven clear of the dropzone. That should be enough for safety, but at least one more win is really needed. The Magpies will leapfrog Crystal Palace with a win here and Benitez will want to get the job of survival – an impressive feat once again given his constraints at Newcastle – done sooner rather than later.

Crystal Palace too will want another win as soon as possible to all but ensure survival. The Eagles were the first victims of Spurs at their new stadium and play away again here, but should have more chances and time on the ball.

Prediction: Both teams to score – Both teams can go for the win in what could be a very watchable game of football.

Everton v Arsenal

  • Venue: Goodison Park
  • Sunday 07 April 14:05
  • Referee: Kevin Friend
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 21/10 D: 13/5 A: 23/20

About the Game:

Everton are another team that are improving with each game and have won three of their last five. One of many teams fighting for seventh place, they have plenty to play for, especially as seventh could prove a Europa League place. This is a tough match though in which the Toffees will have more to do defensively than in other recent matches.

Arsenal won again and are looking one of the strongest candidates to bag a top four finish. The Gunners do face some tricky away fixtures in which they have struggled this season, with this one of them. Everton are no slouches at home, and Arsenal will once again need to be at their best to win.

Prediction: Both teams to score – We fancy this to be a very entertaining game, with both teams better in attack than defence.
