Premier League Matchday 35 Preview – Prediction + Tips 2018/19

It was a big week in the EPL last week. The battle to avoid being the third and final team to be relegated now looks a two horse race between Brighton and Cardiff, with Brighton looking particularly shaky at the moment.

There’s a huge clash at the top between Manchester City and Spurs, the teams’ third meeting in just over a week, while the aforementioned relegation threatened teams both face top ten opposition.

Match of the Day

What can we say about last night! Spurs are through the UCL semi-final after perhaps the most dramatic fixture in the competition’s history. But this is an equally huge match for both teams. City don’t face the kindest run-in, with an away game at Old Trafford next week. The next two games will likely define City’s success domestically.

About the Game:

Even at kick-off here, three days after Wednesday’s UCL quarter final, City players, staff, and fans are still likely to be final the sting of the manner in which they were eliminated on Wednesday. What a match it was, and City’s chances of a quadruple are now gone. Focus is now on the EPL, but just how much that defeat will have taken the wind out of their sails remains to be seen.

It’s more likely that City bounce straight back and take the initiative here. They are at home once again, and will hope that the fans create the same sort of incredible atmosphere we saw on Wednesday. To win here, City will need to improve defensively. They have conceded four times against Spurs in their last two games against them, including three on Wednesday. Laporte had an uncharacteristically poor match, but in attack, City were their usual dangerous selves. Raheem Sterling is the man of the moment, and though fatigue may be an issue, he appears almost undroppable currently.

Spurs are the team through in the UCL, but they have battle scars to show. Harry Kane is already out for the season, while Moussa Sissoko went off injured during the match. He adds to the already long injury list that will leave Spurs short of players – especially in midfield -approaching the busiest time of the season.

Son Heung-min is  the man of the moment for Spurs. His two goals on Wednesday added to his decisive goal in the first leg, as the South Korean continued his fine scoring run. Son seems impervious to fatigue, but Spurs are increasingly relying on him for goals. Fernando Llorente was the man who scored the goal that took Spurs through in the UCL, and he may get another run out here. Pochettino does has options, but his midfield is lacking. That may mean a move to a three man defence, with Davinson Sanchez entering the fray. Spurs may be on a high after Wednesday night, but the job of finishing in the top four domestically is far from done, and defeat here would put it at massive risk altogether.

Prediction: Manchester City Win – City won on the night on Wednesday and will surely score more goals here. Elimination from the UCL will probably only serve to strengthen their resolve to win the league.

Rest of the Premier League Games

There’s lots of action this week, with many teams playing twice in one gameweek.

Bournemouth v Fulham

  • Venue: Bournemouth
  • Saturday 20 April 15:00
  • Referee: David Coote
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 3/5 D: 16/5 A: 4/1

About the Game:

Bournemouth destroyed Brighton last week with just their fifth away win of the season. There is still a good chance of a decent table finish for the Cherries, who have a very kind remaining set of fixtures.

Fulham got their first win under Scott Parker with a surprise win at Everton last weekend. It’s too little too late, but at least that will raise spirits at Craven Cottage a little. They will have a tough job on their hands of repeating their success, with Bournemouth a dangerous attacking outfit.

Prediction: Over 2.5 goals – Leicester are playing some fine football and are getting the results to match. Newcastle will set up to frustrate them, but Leicester should emerge winners.

Huddersfield v Watford

  • Venue: John Smith’s Stadium
  • Saturday 20 April 15:00
  • Referee: Roger East
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 7/2 D: 11/4 A: 8/11

About the Game:

Huddersfield haven’t been able to shake off the shackles since relegation was confirmed. The fans would love to see one last win before they bow out of the EPL, but the Terriers have won just twice at home all season.

Watford will be without Troy Deeney after the forward received a straight red card on Monday night. Watford’s form is still mixed, but they will fancy their chances of winning here.

Prediction: Watford Win – Watford were poor against Arsenal but should improve here against much easier opposition.

West Ham v Leicester

  • Venue: The London Stadium
  • Saturday 20 April 15:00
  • Referee: Lee Probert
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 11/5 D: 12/5 A: 6/5

About the Game:

West Ham’s torrid run continues but they were much improved against United last week and were desperately unlucky not to emerge with anything. Some bad officiating cost the Hammers, who have won just one of the last five.

Leicester fell to a surprise defeat, their first in five games, but they are still in seventh place. However, the Foxes have some difficult remaining fixtures, and this is one of them, with an away trip to West Ham never easy.

Prediction: Both teams to score – West Ham were much improved in their last match and need to carry that forward here.

Wolves v Brighton

  • Venue: Molineux
  • Saturday 20 April 15:00
  • Referee: Craig Pawson
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 8/11 D: 12/5 A: 17/4

About the Game:

Wolves still have a great chance of finishing seventh in their first season, and should be confident of a win here, against a struggling Brighton. However, Wolves have struggled against lower opposition all season, so must be careful not to let standards drop.

A horrific run for Brighton has seen them look the team most likely to drop other than Cardiff, after losing to them in a relegation six-pointer on Tuesday. It’s looking like a two-horse race between the two teams, but Brighton are three points ahead and have a game in hand. Nevertheless, nothing can be taken for granted in a relegation battle, and Brighton need to pick up a win or two to ensure there’s no final day drama.

Prediction: Wolves Win – Wolves have struggled against lower table opposition this season, but we expect a return to form here against a team that are defensively all over the place currently.

Newcastle v Southampton

  • Venue: St James’ Park
  • Saturday 20 April 17:30
  • Referee: Anthony Taylor
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 7/5 D: 11/5 A: 2/1

About the Game:

Newcastle look like they’ve ensured safety once again, but will guarantee it with a win here. Southampton are two points behind the Magpies in the table and in good form, so Newcastle will have to be at their best.

Hasenhuttl has done a fantastic job at Southampton and while they are not yet assured of safety, it’s almost job done. Like with Newcastle, a win for them would do the job, so expect to see Southampton go all out here.

Prediction: Both teams to score – This could be a great game of football between two teams looking to ensure Premier League football for another season.

Everton v Manchester United

  • Venue: Goodison Park
  • Sunday 21 April 13:30
  • Referee: Paul Tierney
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 21/10 D: 5/2 A: 6/5

About the Game:

Everton fell to a shock defeat to Fulham last weekend. The Toffees were on a great run previously, so hopefully that surprise loss hasn’t knocked the win out of their sales. They face a team that will have to give it everything to play UCL football next season, so can expect a tough match.

United are out of the UCL and have now lost five of their last seven in all competitions. The race is now on for a top four finish, but it will not be easy. This is a tough match, and then United host neighbours City for the Manchester derby next weekend. These two matches will go a long way to dictating not just this season, but next season too.

Prediction: Everton Draw no bet – United are in poor form but have to win. This will expose their leaky defence, and they could be made to suffer.

Arsenal v Crystal Palace
Arsenal Form Guide WDLDD
Crystal Palace Form Guide WWWLW
  • Venue: The Emirates
  • Sunday 21 April 16:00
  • Referee: Jonathan Moss
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 1/2 D: 10/3 A: 5/1

About the Game:

Arsenal are in the driving seat for a top four finish. That would be a fantastic achievement for Emery in his first season at the Emirates, but the job is far from done. The Gunners are strongest at home, so while this is a tough match, they should win.

Palace have got the job done and can relax a little. Finding the motivation to push for a top ten finish will be tough and is probably beyond the Eagles, but Roy Hodgson can pat himself on the back for another successful season, especially after Palace were looking in trouble at some stages.

Prediction: Arsenal Win – Arsenal are reliable at home and this should be a routine win for a team that are scoring for fun.

Cardiff v Liverpool
Cardiff Form Guide LDDDW
Liverpool Form Guide WWLWD
  • Venue: Cardiff City Stadium
  • Sunday 21 April 16:00
  • Referee: Martin Atkinson
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 14/1 D: 11/2 A: 2/11

About the Game:

Cardiff finally got a win and it was at the perfect time, winning away in a relegation six-pointer against Brighton. Cardiff are now just three points behind Brighton, and it looks likely that one of those two teams will be the third and final team to drop. They are at home here, but they face the league leaders, so while they will give it everything, they are huge outsiders here.

Liverpool teams of seasons gone by would probably slip up in a match like this. But this Liverpool team looks different. Safely through in the UCL, they can focus on this match. It will not be easy, as they are playing a team fighting for their life, but Liverpool are now a reliable team who are expected to get the job done.

Prediction: Liverpool Win + Both teams to score no – Liverpool are reliable and competent, and while Cardiff have everything to play for, Liverpool should prove too difficult to break down.

Chelsea v Burnley
Chelsea Form Guide DDWLL

  • Venue: Stamford Bridge
  • Monday 22 April 20:00
  • Referee: Kevin Friend
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 1/4 D: 19/4 A: 10/1

About the Game:

Chelsea are still in there, but a top four finish will be tough. A win here is essential, and the next match against Manchester United will be key.

Burnley are on a great run that has seen them all but ensure safety once again. They could well cause an upset here, as they are now a more dangerous attacking force.

Prediction: Under 2.5 goals – Burnley will likely give Chelsea a real go here and we expect a clsoe match.
