Premier League Matchday 4 Preview – Prediction + Tips 2018/19

We’re just four weeks into the 2018/19 season and Manchester City have already dropped points. A spirited performance by Wolves earned them a draw against the Champions, while Liverpool and Tottenham look the teams to beat at this early stage.

West Ham endured another defeat, while Arsenal finally got some points on the board. Chelsea maintained their perfect record, while Bournemouth and Everton remain unbeaten. Cardiff earned another draw, but fellow newcomers Fulham got their first win of the season with an impressive performance against struggling Burnley.

Match of the Day

Two of four teams with a perfect start of three wins from three, at least one of Watford and Tottenham will lose their perfect record after this meeting on Sunday.

  • Sunday 02 September 16:00
  • Referee: Andre Marriner
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 17/4  D: 3/1 A: 8/13

About the Game:

Watford headed into this season as somewhat of an unknown quantity. The Hornets were a mixed bag under Javi Gracia last season, but he seems to have worked magic throughout the summer, and Watford have started with three wins from their first three games.

Roberto Pereyra has been the star of the show with three goals to his name already. But Watford have improved defensively too. That was the problem area last season, so it will be particularly encouraging for Gracia to see his team having conceded just two goals so far. It’s fair to say that they haven’t faced a team as good as Tottenham yet however, so it will be interesting to see how they react. They should line up the same and Pereyra will be the focal point of the attack down the left wing. But the defence will be put to the test more than ever, so we may see a more cautious approach from the manager.

Bet on the match of the week between Watford and Tottenham at Blacktype t&c

Spurs found themselves massively under the cosh in the first half against Manchester United on Monday night. United were playing well and Harry Kane admitted post-match that his team’s performance in that half was not up to scratch. They ramped it up for the second half though, where three goals – one from Kane and two from Lucas Moura – sunk Manchester United in front of their own fans.

That meant that Tottenham have also won their opening three matches. They struggled in the opening match against Newcastle, but the performances have improved gradually. Another tough away test awaits them here and at least one of these teams will lose their perfect record. The bookies seem to think it will be Watford. Spurs are big favourites here with Watford a long-shot, but we don’t think it will anything like that easy. Lucas Moura is making the most of his run in the starting line-up and has three goals to his name already. He will start behind Harry Kane again, who has two goals himself. The way those two link up will be vital to Spur’s chances, but behind them, Christian Eriksen and Deli Alli will be pulling the strings. Many expected Tottenham to suffer from their lack of summer signings, but if they win here, after just beating Manchester United away from home, their credentials for this season will be laid out for all to see.

Prediction: Over 2.5 goals – This could be a great game and we expect Watford to really go for it. Persistence should pay off and result in a goal, but it’s difficult to see Spurs not getting on the score-sheet at least once.

Rest of the Premier League Games

The action takes place over just Saturday and Sunday this week, starting in Leicester where the Foxes host Liverpool. Our match of the day rounds off the action, but Sunday also features Manchester United and Arsenal travelling to Burnley and Cardiff respectively.

  • Venue: King Power
  • Saturday 01 September 12:30
  • Referee: Paul Tierny
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 11/2 D: 7/2 A: 4/9

About the Game:

Back to back wins has helped Leicester get over a tough to swallow opening day defeat to Manchester United. Another tough task awaits them here though, with unbeaten Liverpool the visitors.

Liverpool appear the team to beat, with three wins and three clean sheets from three games, but they didn’t have it all their own way against Brighton last weekend. Away games are where Liverpool are much more likely to falter, so rivals will be closely watching whether the Reds can maintain their perfect record.

Prediction: Liverpool Win + Both teams to score yes – The Reds should chalk up another win but surely they won’t keep a fourth clean sheet in succession.

Brighton v Fulham

  • Venue: AMEX
  • Saturday 01 September 15:00
  • Referee: Lee Probert
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 6/5 D: 23/10 A: 23/10

About the Game:

Brighton’s gameplan against Liverpool nearly worked out last week, when they kept things tight before unleashing a torrent of attacks in the last ten minutes as they looked to salvage a point. It didn’t pay off, but the Seagulls walked away from Anfield with their heads held high. The players and their manager will be looking forward to getting back to their normal game here.

Fulham finally got the win their performances have deserved last weekend against Burnley. Despite a host of new players, things seem to already have fallen into place. Aleksandar Mitrovic scored his second and third goals of the season and is looking like he could be the best of Fulham’s many summer purchases.

Prediction: Both teams to score – Fulham will continue to play their attacking brand of football that will likely result in goals at both ends of the pitch.

Chelsea v Bournemouth

  • Venue: Stamford Bridge
  • Saturday 01 September 15:00
  • Referee: Lee Mason
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 2/7 D: 19/4 A: 8/1

About the Game:

The performances might not have been perfect, but Chelsea are three wins for three so far. The Blues should only get stronger as Sarri’s brand of football becomes instilled in the players. With home advantage here, Bournemouth could be the next victims.

The Cherries are also unbeaten however. Coming back from behind to win against West Ham and to draw last week against Everton showed character that was perhaps missing from Bournemouth in seasons past. Expect them to give it a good go here.

Prediction: Over 2.5 goals – All but one of the six games featuring these two teams this season have seen over 2.5 goals scored.

Crystal Palace v Southampton

  • Venue: Selhurst Park
  • Saturday 01 September 15:00
  • Referee: Martin Atkinson
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 19/20 D: 5/2 A: 14/5

About the Game:

Palace can count themselves unlucky to have only won one of their three matches so far. The visitors today have only managed a draw so far, so Palace will be out for blood here, and their attacking style should reap rewards.

Southampton have had a poor start and apart from new signing Danny Ings, there are few positives to be taken. They need to improve sharply, but it won’t be easy against a team known for scoring goals.

Prediction: Crystal Palace win – Palace are playing well and scoring goals and Southampton’s first task will simply be finding a way to stop them.

Everton v Huddersfield

  • Venue: Goodison Park
  • Saturday 01 September 15:00
  • Referee: Stuart Atwell
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 1/2 D: 3/1 A: 6/1

About the Game:

A second red card in just three games, this time for main-man Richarlison, meant Everton squandered a two goal lead last week against Bournemouth. The Toffees are still unbeaten, but will now be without Richarlison, though they should still have enough to beat struggling Huddersfield.

A point against Cardiff is less than what Huddersfield fans hoped for last week. Winning those games will be vital to survival, but the Terriers will also dig in and try to pick up points in matches such as this.

Prediction: Everton win – Richarlison is a big loss, but the Toffees should still have enough firepower to see of the visitors.

West Ham v Wolves
West Ham Form Guide LLLLL

  • Venue: London Stadium
  • Saturday 01 September 15:00
  • Referee: Chris Kavanagh
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 6/4 D: 23/10 A: 9/5

About the Game:

West Ham won in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night, but they’ve tasted only defeat so far in the league. This is another good chance for a win, but Wolves are proving difficult to beat. As usual, West Ham need to improve defensively, but they could be with without Marko Arnautovic, meaning their attack would also be significantly weakened.

Wolves became the first team to take points from Manchester City last weekend with an incredible performance against the Champions. Momentum from that match could spill over here and many will be fancying Wolves to take all three points from East London.

Prediction: Both teams to score – It’s difficult to see West Ham winning with their defence in such bad shape, but one thing that does promise is goals.

Manchester City v Newcastle
Man C Form Guide WDLDD
Newcastle Form Guide WWWLW
  • Venue: The Etihad
  • Sunday 01 September 17:30
  • Referee: Kevin Friend
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 1/10 D: 8/1 A: 20/1

About the Game:

City may be a bit shell shocked after drawing with newly promoted Wolves last weekend. It’s doubtful that will lead to anything here though, as City still played well, and could have scored numerous goals if not for the woodwork. Expect a return to winning ways here.

Newcastle can count themselves unlucky not to have more than just one draw to their name. Despite solid performances, it’s points that are needed, and patience is quickly wearing thin. With the Champions this week’s opponents, few will expect any more points to be earned here.

Prediction: Manchester City Over 1.5 Second half goals – Newcastle’s resistance will only last so long and there could be a number second half goals.

Cardiff v Arsenal
Cardiff Form Guide LDDDW
Arsenal Form Guide WWLWD
  • Venue: Cardiff City Stadium
  • Sunday 02 September 13:30
  • Referee: Anthony Taylor
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 9/2 D: 3/1 A: 4/7

About the Game:

Cardiff continue to prove difficult to beat, but they will soon need to start picking up wins. At home is the best place to do so, but they host a tricky opponent here, who have just picked up their first win of the season.

The scoreline perhaps made it look easier than it was, but Arsenal dug in to beat West Ham last weekend. The Gunners can now look forward to a kind run of fixtures and should look to take full advantage, starting with a win here.

Prediction: Arsenal win – Cardiff are yet to score this season and although it won’t be easy, the Gunners should win here.

Burnley v Manchester United
Burnley Form Guide DDWLL
Man U Form Guide LWDLL
  • Venue: Turf Moor
  • Sunday 02 September 16:00
  • Referee: Jonathan Moss
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 5/1 D: 13/5 A: 8/13

About the Game:

Apart from qualifying for the Europa League, the season hasn’t started quite how Burnley would have liked. The usual defensive resilience hasn’t been there and the Clarets have fallen to back-to-back defeats.

Manchester United have also seen back-to-back defeats and the pressure is piling on José Mourinho. The performance against Tottenham was much improved however, and if United continue to play like that, they will surely win games.

Prediction: Under 2.5 goals – Manchester United are struggling to break teams down, while Burnley will focus on returning to their usual organised approach which has worked so well in the past.
