Premier League Matchday 5 Preview – Prediction + Tips 2017/18

Matchday five gets off to an early start with a Friday night fixture between struggling Bournemouth and newcomers Brighton. The action goes through to Sunday where there’s a super Sunday to look forward to. Chelsea will host Arsenal, before Everton visit Old Trafford to try to knock league leaders Manchester United off the summit.

Match of the Day

This week, our pick of the fixtures is Sunday’s clash between Chelsea and Arsenal. Both teams won their last Premier League match, but it is Chelsea who go into this one with the better form, with three league wins in a row and an impressive 6-0 midweek victory in the Champions League.

  • Referee: Michael Oliver
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 8/11 D: 11/4 A: 7/2

About the Game:

After three wins in a row – including an impressive victory away at Tottenham – it’s safe to say Chelsea have convinced even their sternest critics that there’s no crisis at the club and they are genuine title contenders. Álvaro Morata has hit the ground running with three goals already, while the return of Eden Hazard will bolster the attack even further. Antonio Conte had the luxury of being able to rotate many players for the midweek Champions League victory against Qarabag, so there’s no reason for Chelsea to go into this one fatigued. The Blues will be expected to win here.

Bet on the match of the week between Chelsea and Arsenal at Betfred .

Arsenal might have felt that they had answered some of their critics with last week’s win over Bournemouth, but the truth is that the real test is here. A Thursday night Europa League against FC Köln required a second-half comeback, but Arsenal do look to be re-gaining confidence. Alexis Sánchez is rapidly returning to match fitness and could start, but that would likely mean dropping Danny Welbeck, who scored two goals last week. Finding a way past Chelsea’s rock solid defence is going to be tough, but stopping Morata and co from scoring could be even tougher.

Prediction: Chelsea win – The Blues will be too strong for a nervous Arsenal.

Rest of the Premier League Games

A full line-up of Premier League action awaits us this week. Things kick off on Friday night where Bournemouth host Brighton. The Cherries have lost all four of their opening fixtures and will be eyeing this one up as a great opportunity to get some points on the board. Spurs are expected to continue their winning ways at home to Swansea, while Manchester City and Manchester United have a more difficult task on their hands, away to Watford and at home against Everton respectively.

  • Venue: Vitality Stadium
  • Friday 15th September 20:00
  • Referee: Craig Pawson
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 2/1 D: 12/5 A: 11/4

About the Game:

Along with Crystal Palace, the Cherries are the only other team to have picked up zero points so far. In fairness, Bournemouth were hardly expected to take much from the last two matches against Arsenal and Manchester City, but lacklustre performances against West Brom and Watford do suggest there could be problems at the Vitality this season.

Brighton added to their draw against Watford with their first win of the season with an impressive win against West Brom. Pascal Groß showed the Premier League what he can do and Brighton demonstrated that they can still score goals despite having not signed a striker in the transfer window. While this is definitely a great chance for Bournemouth to find their first points of the season, Brighton are no pushovers, and they will also view this one as a great chance to increase their win tally.

Prediction: Draw – Bournemouth cannot afford defeat while a draw is a good result for Brighton too.

Crystal Palace v Southampton

  • Venue: Selhurst Park
  • Saturday 16th September 12:30
  • Referee: Robert Madley
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 2/1 D: 9/4 A: 11/8

About the Game:

After just four games in charge as manager of Crystal Palace, Frank De Boer has been sacked from the role, after Palace became the first team to lose their opening four Premier League matches without scoring a single goal. Former England manager Roy Hodgson has taken over, but there’s much talk about whether he is the best choice to pull the club out of the mess they are in. Palace are still without Wildred Zaha and Ruben Loftus-Cheek is also unlikely to recover in time to play. Without proper service for Christian Benteke, it’s hard to see where the goals will come from.

Southampton haven’t been much better in an attacking sense themselves. They’ve recorded three goals, but all of those came in one match against ten-men West Ham, while two of those goals were penalties. They do look a little better at the back however, with two clean sheets from four. A disappointing loss at home to Watford last week will mean that neither team will come into this one with much confidence.

Prediction: U 2.5 goals – Neither team is currently strong in attack, while Southampton will be tough for the home side to break down.

Huddersfield v Leicester

  • Venue: Kirklees Staidum
  • Saturday 16th September 15:00
  • Referee: Jonathan Moss
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 2/2 D: 9/4 A: 11/8

About the Game:

Huddersfield’s bubble finally burst after a fantastic start to life in the Premier League with a disappointing loss to West Ham on Monday night. Huddersfield were second best all over the pitch against a West Ham team that had zero points prior to kick off. There’s still plenty to smile about though and it’s home games that will really matter if the Terriers are to survive in the Premier League. A trip from Leicester will be the sternest test they’ve faced this season, so it will be interesting to see if Huddersfield can put last week’s loss behind them and rise to the occasion.

Leicester currently sit in 17th place with just three points and eight goals against, the second highest amount. That doesn’t tell the whole story however. The Foxes have had an extremely tough start, having played Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea already. Despite the defeats, the performances have been solid, and with the fixture list turning more favourable, the Foxes should start to rack up the points. Leicester will be well up for this one then, as a great chance to get back to winning ways.

Prediction: BTTS – The Foxes will be raring to go for this one.

Liverpool v Burnley

  • Venue: Anfield
  • Saturday 16th September 15:00
  • Referee: Roger East
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 2/9 D: 5/1 A: 11/1

About the Game:

Liverpool will be without the suspended Sadio Mané as they look to put their 5-0 defeat to Manchester City behind them. They can feel a little hard done to after only drawing with Sevilla in Wednesday’s Champions League opening match. The Reds were the better team, had tons of chances, and even missed a penalty. But they can’t afford to let that play on their minds in what could be a tricky encounter.

Burnley continued their impressive start to the season with a slim victory against Crystal Palace last weekend. Even without Mané, stopping Liverpool will be a challenge. Even more so since goalkeeper Tom Heaton is out with a suspected dislocated shoulder. Nick Pope will step in and Burnley’s defence has remained solid despite the departure of Michael Keane. But, if Liverpool appear a little slow after their midweek Champions League exertions, then don’t put it past Burnley to take something from this game.

Prediction: Liverpool win – It won’t be easy, but Liverpool will sneak a victory at home.

Newcastle v Stoke

  • Venue: St James’ Park
  • Saturday 16th September 15:00
  • Referee: Stuart Atwell
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 11/8 D: 9/4 A: 2/1

About the Game:

Newcastle made it two wins in a row last weekend after victory at Swansea, which will have helped to resolve the uncertainty around the future of manager Rafa Benitez and the disappointment of the recent transfer window. Consecutive clean sheets also shows signs of a quickly improving team that have found their feet in the Premiership. Stoke will be a sterner test, but the Magpies will be confident that they can take something from this game.

Stoke too will be very satisfied with their last result, having held Manchester United at home. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored two as Mark Hughes continues to look for a winning formula amongst his players. Stoke have taken points from both Arsenal and Manchester United so far, but cannot be complacent against a quickly improving Newcastle team.

Prediction: O 2.5 goals – Both teams have found their scoring boots.

Watford v Manchester City

  • Venue: Vicarage Road
  • Saturday 16th September 15:00
  • Referee: Anthony Taylor
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 15/2 D: 4/1 A: 1/3

About the Game:

Watford have made a strong, unbeaten start to the season under new manager Marco Silva. Silva’s credentials were well known, but he has quickly turned Watford into a formidable force. Andre Gray is still looking for his first goal for the Hornets, but the goals have been flowing from midfield, with Doucouré and Richarlison providing the spark. This will be the toughest encounter yet for the Hornets, but they did hold Liverpool at home on the opening day of the season.

Manchester City are starting to fulfill the attacking promise their squad suggests after putting five past Liverpool and then four past Feyenoord in the Champions League. With such attacking talent in their team, City will always score goals, but they still don’t look as defensively solid as they perhaps should. Vincent Kompany’s absence won’t help in this area, and Pep Guardiola will be hoping that this season it’s not a case of having to outscore opponents in order to win.

Prediction: BTTS yes – Watford will more than hold their own here.

West Brom v West Ham

  • Venue: The Hawthorns
  • Saturday 16th September 15:00
  • Referee: Paul Tierny
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 13/10 D: 9/4 A: 21/10

About the Game:

West Brom’s unbeaten run came to and end last week with a surprise defeat to Brighton. The Baggie’s usually organised backline was broken for the second consecutive game, as Brighton eventually put three goals past them. This job will be equally tough for the defence, who will have the height and power of Andy Carroll and the speed and positioning of Hernandez to deal with. The Baggies are also yet to score more than one goal in a game in the league, suggesting they could have some issues here.

West Ham’s miserable start to the season finally took an upturn with a win against high-flying Huddersfield on Monday night. A trip to the Hawthorns is never easy, but the Hammers will now be looking to put those games behind them and push on. There’s usually little to separate these two teams in the standings at the end of the year, and that’s likely to be the same case on the pitch.

Prediction: U 2.5 goals – West Brom’s defence will manage the threat of Andy Carroll.

Spurs v Swansea

  • Venue: Wembley
  • Saturday 16th September 17:30
  • Referee: Mike Dean
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 2/9 D: 5/1 A: 11/1

About the Game:

Spurs made no mistakes last week in what could have been a tricky encounter with Everton. Harry Kane finally got on the scoresheet with a brace and Christian Eriksen also continued his fantastic start to the season. In fact, Kane has well and truly found his form, with a brace against Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday, which Spurs eventually won 3-1. It was an impressive attacking performance and if Spurs carry that momentum forward, they will be unstoppable here.

Swansea couldn’t improve upon their draw with Southampton last week against Newcastle, eventually succumbing to a single goal. The much anticipated debut of Renato Sanches proved to be an underwhelming affair and the team must improve in what is sure to be a very testing game. Few will be expecting the Swans to leave Wembley with any points.

Prediction: Tottenham win – Spurs will make no mistakes it what could be a comfortable game.

Manchester United v Everton

  • Venue: London Stadium
  • Sunday 17th September 16:00
  • Referee: Andre Marriner
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 3/10 D: 5/1 A: 9/1

About the Game:

Manchester United’s perfect start came to an end last week, when Stoke held them to a 2-2 draw. United still sit pretty on the summit, equal on points with neighbours Manchester City. The one caveat is that Paul Pogba – instrumental to United’s success so far – picked up a hamstring injury in the midweek Champions League fixture and will be out for around six weeks. Nevertheless, United have a strong squad, and it should likely be a case of Ander Herrera being a straight replacement.

Everton looked a team without an identity last weekend against Spurs. A lack of solidity meant that they eventually lost by three goals, while never really looking like scoring themselves. The Toffees met the same fate in the Europa League on Tuesday when they lost by three goals away at Atalanta. The performance will have to drastically improve if they want to challenge the currently unbeaten Red Devils, but the omens are not good and there have been few signs that the multiple new signings are starting to gel.

Prediction: Manchester United win – Everton are lacking form and confidence.
